Allied forces captured Messina in Sicily while Rome reported heavy bombings across Italy and continued air and naval pressure. The report notes Allied advances from Wewak to Regensburg and MacArthur's forces moving toward Rabaul as Quebec talks loom between Roosevelt and Churchill.
Allied forces completed the Sicilian campaign with heavy bombardment from Flying Fortresses across the Mediterranean. German defenses on the Italian toe increased as Messina fell, while Eisenhower prepared new objectives from Southern France to Greece. The campaign cost few Allied lives relative to its three week extension, and German broadcasts claimed evacuation of all forces.
Panhandle residents welcomed rainfall that lifted water use limits. Amarillo saw about a half inch from 4 to 7 am while reservoirs filled with 8.5 million gallons. Rain extended from Pampa to Clovis NM with Tucumcari NM recording 0.84 inches..cool weather expected for several days.
Miss Mary E. Hudspeth longtime West Texas State College faculty member Canyon died after a short illness. She joined in 1910 as mathematics teacher and first dean of women later leading the modern language department. Born in Monticello Arkansas she studied at Baylor Peabody University of Madrid and Columbia among others. Continued on Page 11.
Allied forces shattered Japanese air power in the Wewak area of New Guinea by attacking four airdromes with Liberators Flying Fortresses Mitchells and Bostons. The raid destroyed at least 120 planes and damaged 50 more while inflicting heavy casualties on enemy air personnel and disrupting reinforcements. Over 225 Allied aircraft conducted the dawn to daylight assault.
Soviet forces launched a major assault on Bryansk, advancing up to four miles and occupying more than 60 towns and villages. In Kharkov area, Russians pressed claims despite heavy German counterattacks while Berlin reports cited large German losses and encirclements.
Allied daylight raids targeted Hitler Europe with heavy bombers striking Schweinfurt near Frankfurt Regensburg in central Germany and the Fiat Mirafiori works in Turin. RAF flights earlier hit Northern Italy including Turin with multiple waves damaging airfields and rail yards. German reports claimed bombers downed in Switzerland amid intensified Channel air combat.
President Roosevelt Nas arrived in Quebec for conferences with Prime Minister Churchill. Churchill and Prime Minister Mackenzie King greeted the President at the train and accompanied him to the Citadel in an open car.
Weather bulletin notes cooler start Wednesday with warming later in the day for Amarillo and West Texas and New Mexico. Scattered showers and thunderstorms expected in West Wednesday afternoon and evening. Daily precipitation totals reach 0.48 inches with sunrise at 7 08 and sunset at 8 33.
Four American Fortresses based in the Mediterranean bomb Istres le Tube and Salons, 25 miles northwest of Marseille, damaging parked aircraft and triggering fires. Vichy radio reports damage and casualties as recon aircraft noted torpedo carriers at Salons and HE-323 transports at Istres le Tube.
London reports heavy Allied mood at a forward base as Sicily’s fall sparks speculation of a new major strike. Britons demand a second front while nonresidents are cleared from coastlines and heavy air raids continue. Churchill discuss war direction at home amid signs an end to years of war may be near.
