At Bulletin Convention Hall Chicago on August 16 Frank McKinney a key strategist for Averell Harriman conceded defeat for his candidate.
Adlai Stevenson surged to within 12 percent of the 686 delegate threshold for the Democratic nomination. An AP tally shows Maryland’s 18 votes would go to Stevenson, bringing his total to 674. Harriman’s count falls from 239 to 234 as delegates shift in yesterday’s tally.
Chicago August 15 The Democratic National Convention moves toward nominating Adlai Stevenson and deciding the candidate for second place with little actual decision by many delegates. Some supporters of favorite sons still search for a last minute pivot as the parade seems over.
Gas service returned to Hereford area irrigation wells at 1 p m after El Paso Natural Gas Co agreed to supply an additional 20 million cubic feet daily to Pioneer. Pioneer president Stony Wall said the temporary fix uses a Dumas loop. permanent lines needed. About 250 wells may have been affected as farmers shifted to butane or electric power. A general rain was seen as the best long term solution.
