In Plainville Connecticut on August 15 a 16 year old youth hunting birds accidentally shot and killed his mother Teresa Procko 43 while she picked corn in a field near their home. The shooter Michael Procko fled the scene after the accident.

WPA wage rates across the nation were raised or lowered affecting 2.2 million workers. The new scale, tied to a $1.477 billion WPA appropriation for 1940, aims to lift the national average monthly wage from 53 to 55 dollars while limiting regional disparity.
