Washington reports a GAO auditor testified that records of stockpile profits at Hanna Co were burned and other documents missing. Former Secretary George M. Humphrey is to testify Thursday. Auditor Henson described understated income taxes and artificial cost increases in 1957 to raise government nickel prices.
Kathy Flake and Loyette Love, eighth graders from Loveland, faced a money need while planning school careers. They found key type clothing jobs attracted more employers, and on Tuesday they were busy snipping up a storm in their neighborhood. Kathy is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Flake of 2716 Highland Loveland and Loyette is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Love of 1961 Highland Loveland.
The Senate approved cloture to limit debate on a private space communications bill by 63 to 27. The measure would authorize a government regulated private corporation to own and run the U S space relay network, amid fierce ownership battles with AT&T and opposition asserting private control. Final action could come after amendments, with Dirksen and Mansfield leading the push to invoke the 45 year old rule.
McSpadden 45 of Lubbock, once a rival of Billy Sol Estes in anhydrous ammonia business, was ruled bankrupt by Bankruptcy referee Frank R. Murray in Lubbock. Estes had been declared bankrupt earlier by Judge R A Thomason. The case centers on alleged fraudulent mortgages involving Estes and McSpadden at Superior Manufacturing and grain storage interests.
Former U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers filed for divorce from his wife Barbara in Baldwin County Superior Court Georgia alleging habitual intoxication cursing and abuse. He said the couple have been separated since May 27 seven months after his release from a Russian prison and after a 21 month espionage sentence. He declined further comment.
Soviet astronaut Andrian Nikolayev lost his temper when a ground station fed him an incorrect time as his craft overflew northern Russia and Scandinavia. Sweden’s Enkoping station recorded the outburst to Vesna One, the spring season flight near Leningrad.
In a letter from Wellington, D. E. Scott cites Dr Betts on 17 percent of Americans reading books and notes 83 percent writing. He urges more reading to explore life, health, and personal growth.
Soviet spacemen Nikolayev and Popovich, aboard Vostok II and Vostok IV, entered their fifth and fourth days in orbit, respectively. Tass reported they continued with the flight plan, remained in good spirits, and expected a noon descent as preparations for a Red Square welcome began.
Four robbers with submachine guns halted a U S mail truck on the Plymouth bypass and seized 16 bags of registered mail. The loot, believed to include Cape Cod deposits, ranged up to $2 million but exact figures were unclear as pouches remained sealed. The truck crew were gagged and tied before the robbers fled in two cars to Randolph.

Dist Atty Victor Breen said unlawful abandonment of minor children and leaving them destitute were filed this afternoon in Ninth Judicial District Court against William Sedhum, 38, of Van Nuys, California. He left his year old daughter and eight year old son with a foster home in Tucumcari after car trouble and a junked vehicle stop. The mother in Los Angeles indicated she would pursue returning the children to California. Sedicum was arrested when charges were filed.
