Port Arthur official reports reveal Yarborough responding to charges tied to a political letter address. The case draws attention to local political discourse and legal actions.
Gov. Allan Shivers praised Ike's 1952 win and defended loyalty to Texas over Illinois politics as he campaigned with Yarborough, who accused Shivers of fear in public debate and attacked his water plan and anti Communist stance while touring West Texas.
Two used car dealers in Wichita sue a dozen auto agencies for six million dollars claiming interference with their sale of new cars. The suits, first of their kind, challenge manufacturer dealer relations and allege pressure to limit access to ads. Plaintiffs include Don Schmid Packard Inc. Schmid Motors Inc. and Eagle Motor Co.
Amarillo defeats Pampa 8 to 7 while Clovis beats Abilene 11 to 5 and Plainview wins 12 to 5 over Albuquerque. In the National League Brooklyn tops New York 3 to 2 as Pittsburgh wins 9 to 5 and St Louis defeats Cincinnati 10 to 8. Milwaukee 5 Chicago 2 and Philadelphia 5 to 0 over Washington. In American League Chicago 1 Detroit 0 in six innings and New York 8 Boston 2. Cleveland 9 Baltimore 4.
Yuri Rastvorov, a former Russian spy who defected to the United States, told reporters he has disclosed all he knows to U.S. intelligence. At a State Department briefing he said he once ran a Moscow network in the Far East and knew of three others, while denying any special treatment from his asylum.
Mayor Bud Curtis reports a city commission statement will be released today concerning the police department investigation. The commission met in a special session yesterday from 10 30 a m to 1 15 p m with Commissioners Upshaw Jordan and the mayor, aided by the Oschner Lockhart firm, discussing two months of testimony.
Five dangerous escapees from Norfolk prison colony were recaptured across Massachusetts Rhode Island and Connecticut after a nightlong escape. One guard and a Pawtucket civilian were held but later freed. Lavoie described the group’s hideout near Lorraine Mills in Putnam. Halliday led the breakout and faced a 12 year term.
A Philadelphia jury found nine Communists guilty of conspiracy to teach and advocate violent overthrow of the U S government. The long trial spanned 71 days of testimony with sentencing set for Aug 23. Bail ranges from 10 000 to 20 000, with restrictions on travel.

In Camp Springs Maryland the Andrews Air Force Bank was robbed of 124638. A speeding stop led to the arrest of Clarence Duke McGann 24 of New York City identified as one gunman. He appeared before a U.S. commissioner in Upper Marlboro and is held on 50000 bond awaiting a Wednesday hearing. Two other suspects were briefly detained but escaped. No money has been recovered. A ten percent reward was offered.
Marvin Doss Miller, 39, formerly of Amarillo, wandered from his Fort Worth home to Lake Worth last Saturday. His clothes were found along the shore, three days of lake dragging failed to locate him, and he later came to near Ashfork Arizona. A motorist found him and he described waking to kill a snake before reaching Amarillo.
Bobby Joe Rine, 24, Burger chef, had bond set at $50,000 by U.S. Commissioner Mary K. Harty after arraignment here. Rine, brought from Borger by Deputy U.S. Marshal Eugene Williams, admits participation in the $22,000 Erick Oklahoma bank robbery and is held in Potter County jail. A federal grand jury will hear the case. Co-defendants James Darrell Holland and James Earl Sler were arrested in California on August 3.
