Senate debate raged over a government bill to bar unions deemed Communist infiltrated from NLRB facilities and elections. Critics warned the move could become a powerful anti union weapon while backers said it would strengthen unions by blocking Red penetration. Senator George of Georgia expressed doubts as discussions continued.
Absentee voting surged Wednesday ahead of the August 28 runoff between Gov. Allan Shivers and Ralph Yarborough. County clerks from Dallas to Harris reported higher absentee totals than in the first primary. In Dallas 1,164 ballots were cast. Houston 1,442 ballots were turned in. Austin saw about five times July levels. Waco and Tyler also reported increases.
U.S. District Judge Robert L. Taylor issued a Taft-Hartley injunction to halt a planned strike by CIO atomic workers at Oak Ridge Tennessee and Paducah Kentucky. The order imposes an 80 day cooling off period with an inquiry board, while workers stay on the job and management cannot lock out. About 4,500 workers are involved across the two plants that supply uranium-235 for weapons and reactors.

A 20 minute thunder squall near Marblehead Massachusetts capsized about 75 small racing sailboats during Marblehead race week. About 100 sailors were involved and several wereimmersion treated at Marblehead and Corinthian yacht clubs before most boats were towed to the piers. Speed boats rescued all occupants in a swift operation.
Gov. Allan Shivers urged radio listeners that Communist dominated unions tied to his rival Ralph Yarborough back a plan to paralyze Texas Gulf Coast oil centers. He cited the Port Arthur DPCWA strike as part of a broader effort to control ports and petroleum hubs nationwide.
Ralph Yarborough assailed Gov Allan Shivers as a dangerous and cheap politician for refusing federal funds for Texas dams. He spoke to about 1500 at the courthouse in Odessa during his campaign swing for governor, criticizing Shivers and pledging opposition in the August 28 runoff.
The Army states it does not believe any active officer released the 2% page FBI extracts to Senator McCarthy. Justice Department informed. McCarthy notes the release was part of a 15 page Army file summary and defends its significance. The Senate has a special committee probing censure charges.

Gangster Touhy, 56, surrendered to U.S. marshals after the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered his return to Stateville prison. He had been free 49 hours following a federal judge's ruling that his conviction was based on lies. The court notified authorities to custody him with Warden Ragen of Joliet until further orders.
