Army air ace Barksdale dies after parachute failure

Dayton Ohio Aug 11 Lieutenant E H Barksdale an army air ace famed for four to seven confirmed aerial victories during World War I died near McCook Field when his parachute failed after he leapt from a spiraling craft. The veteran, once wounded in combat, was observed plunging to the ground as the canvas tore.

First Annual City Golf Championship Sets 50 Entrants

Amarillo Country Club hosts a highly anticipated first annual city golf championship this week and next with over fifty entrants. Terral Trails Martineau in Arkansas Primary Returns

Governor Tom J. Terral trailed Chancellor J. E. Martineau by 12 875 votes as 1595 of 2009 precincts reported in Arkansas. Terral 75 449 Martineau 88 324 with 163 773 votes counted and about 45000 remaining, in the latest unofficial totals.

Potter County Sets Next Year Tax Rate At 80 Cents

Potter county commissioners announced a tax rate of 80 cents for next year, 15 cents lower than last year, based on a county valuation of 25 million dollars versus 20 million prior. Sar Mollon, tax board chairman, disclosed the figures after a three day review of the auditor’s report. The state tax last year was 70 cents but dropped to 60 cents this year by the state board.

Boy 12 suffers head wound after high dive mishap at Natatorium

Luther McKnight, 12, of 1509 West Eighth Street, struck his head on the pool bottom during a high dive at the Natatorium in San Jacinto I. He received a five inch scalp laceration, was carried from the water conscious by friends, and taken to Northwest Texas Hospital. Dr. B. M. Puckett said the injury did not appear serious.

Woman Dies in Midwest Heat Wave

Heat wave fatalities include Nellie Allison a 27 year old nurse at a Kansas City Sanitarium and former Boonville Missouri resident who collapsed and died after a pavement fall. Maximum heat reached 107 at five p.m. Stenographer Josephine Hodkins also collapsed and was treated at home after emergency care.

Weather forecast for Amarillo and Southwest region

The forecast notes Thursday partly cloudy for West Texas and generally fair for New Mexico with little temperature change. Highs near the afternoon reach the low 90s, with overnight lows around the mid 60s. Pressure patterns show high pressure over the Dakotas and Great Lakes and a low over the south aiding Thursday’s weather.
