Amarillo linked to Geraldine Farrar Carmen engagement as part of a party plan. Texas GOP state executive committee met amid heat to select gubernatorial contender names and set dates for the convention. Multiple candidates named include Boynton, Kennery, Wharton, Kell, Bullington, Goen, Creager.
Associated Press report details John W Davis launching his Democratic presidential bid in a downpour at Plaza Clarksburg. He attacked Republicans for corruption, outlined a program including tax reform, farm aid, conservation, and prohibition enforcement, and asserted religious freedom against all opposition. Senator Walsh praised Davis as liberal and progressive, while Davis defended his past as a lawyer and pledged allegiance to the Democratic party.
Geraldine Farrar, longtime Metropolitan Opera star, will tour Amarillo with a 30 performer company in Carmen. The production travels with its own 16 member orchestra, costumes, and scenery and will be staged at the municipal auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Panhandle Music Festival, marks one of the season’s grand opera highlights for Amarillo.
Official tabulation of the Texas July 26 primary shows Miriam A. Ferguson of Temple assigned to face Felix D. Robertson in the second Democratic primary August 23. Ferguson led Lynch Davidson of Houston by 5,216, while S. M. Marrs ran unopposed for superintendent with 725,332 votes.
D E Colp of San Antonio, chairman of the state park board, met Canyon, Claude and Amarillo officials to discuss a scenic route through Palo Duro Canyon linking Canyon and Claude. He visited the Harding Ranch as a potential small park site and urged community cooperation to fund and build the route by next summer, with parole labor for the project.
George W. Wharton, a former Amarillo attorney with the firm Thompson Barwise Wharton, the general lawyers for Fort Worth and Denver railway, seeks the Republican nomination for governor. He previously served two terms as exalted ruler of the Amarillo Elks Lodge from 1912 to 1914.
Waco police investigate the murder of 70 year old W. H. Poston and his 11 year old grandson Dan Poston who were attacked while sleeping on a pallet in a vacant lot to escape heat. Both suffered head injuries from a brick blow. Dan ran for help. No suspect found.
Amarillo and vicinity expect partly cloudy skies on Tuesday with a trend toward unsettled conditions and warmer temperatures. West Texas areas may see scattered showers in the west portion, with similar unsettled weather and warmth spreading to the Panhandle and eastern New Mexico. Temperature by hours shows broad daytime highs near the mid 90s with cooler overnight values. overall the outlook calls for little change in temperature despite cloudiness and rain chances.
EF A Simpson of Clarendon has been named chief counsel for Mrs Ruth Hobart in civil and criminal cases. Hobart bound over to the grand jury on a murder and a conspiracy charge with bonds of 4000 and 500. J W Culwell remains with the proceedings. Simpson doubts the state can indict Hobart or Ernest T Miller and says civil and possible criminal work may follow. The Potter county grand jury convenes Monday August 25 with few developments expected. Hobart thanks The News and Post for fair coverage and complains of publicity.
Dallas August 11 P I Gleason 87 cashier and manager of a cotton firm died from a bullet wound at a house he occupied while owners were away. Police chief Henry Tanner of Highland Park said it was an unloaded pistol discharged accidentally in Gleason's hands. He was alone and not found for over four hours.
The Democratic National Committee in Clarksburg West Virginia announced the unanimous selection of Clem L Shaver of Fairmont as chairman. James W Gerard former ambassador to Germany was named treasurer and Mrs Emily Newell Blair of Missouri became vice chairwoman with Frank B Hagen Samuel Amidon as vice chairmen. Charles Greathouse re elected secretary Burt New named executive secretary. Jesse Jones named chairman of finance committee. A dispute arose over expanding vice chairmen from three to four leading to procedural votes and a separate election vote outcome. The issue centered on Montana member J Bence Kremer and the committee authority.
Lebaron Bradford Colt senior United States Senator from Rhode Island is critically ill at his home in Bristow tonight after a week of illness his condition became serious late today physicians from Boston and Providence were called to attend the 78 year old senator
Seymour Texas Aug 11 Delbert Houser 16 of Lamesa is free on $2000 bond after the instant death of Dale Fondren 14 of Lamesa during a fist fight in Seymour. Fondren's head struck a railroad track during the brawl, breaking his neck.
Associated Press reports Mrs Rose Daggett aged 22 was found dead in a hospital room in Del Rio Texas with a pistol bullet through her heart. Her husband arrived with her from Chicago and hospital authorities were unable to explain how she obtained the pistol.
In Fort Worth a special Texas Farm Labor conference declined to endorse either Democratic gubernatorial candidate for August 23. The rules committee recommended no endorsement, noting neither Miriam Ferguson nor Felix Robertson sought backing and recalling T. W. Davidson’s prior primary defeat. A roar of Ferguson cheer arose during the vote.
