State Senator Teel Bivins of Amarillo says Governor George W. Bush is determined to win the Iowa straw poll this Saturday. The event is a fund raiser for the Iowa GOP, shaping the campaign and related party activities.
Jon Blair a 43 year old nurse from Dumas survived four days stranded in reeds and marsh along the Canadian River near Lake Meredith. Hungry and hypothermic he clung to life with help from family memories and wild grasshoppers after his dog wandered off.
Blair, found at Lake Meredith, engaged in a desperate effort to signal helicopters circling overhead after being located on the far side of the lake during an early Tuesday search. Details continued on Page 7A.
A CDC led analysis reports that infant AIDS cases fell 67 percent from 907 in 1992 to 297 in 1997 largely due to prenatal AZT treatment. Experts say mother to child HIV transmission could become virtually eliminated in the United States, though developing countries still face significant issues.
Park ranger Laura Slige announced a positive outcome after water skiers located Jon Blair at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday on Lake Meredith. Blair had disappeared along the Canadian River between Plum Creek Canyon and U S Highway 287 after his wife reported him missing Monday. His canoe was found south of the planned pickup point and Lifestar crews spotted Blair.
In Amarillo’s Puckett Place, Unit 1 residents signed a 60 signatory petition to allow composition roofs, citing a 1964 deed rule change after 35 years. Meanwhile Unit 20 remains bound by a 1973 no composition roof restriction, upheld Aug 2 by Judge David Greason in a summary judgment.
The Oklahoma Water Resources Board voted 5-3 to deny Seaboard Farms ground-water permit at the Wakefield site amid protests in Oklahoma City. Protesters hailed the ruling as a major victory while Seaboard plans to appeal, arguing the Bethel Church of God activities and a 1998 setback law do not justify the denial.
