Senate approves defense bill with bomber deferral

The Senate passed a 104 billion defense appropriation, deferring 1 billion for the first three B1 bombers until after next February. The vote was 82 to 6 with a conference to resolve differences.

Gas Explosion Kills 6 In North Louisiana

A 20 inch natural gas pipeline ruptured near Calhoun Louisiana causing a massive blast that killed six people and destroyed three trailers and two houses. The rupture created a 30 foot crater and a 200 foot high flame that burned for about an hour as crews could not enter due to heat. The line fed gas from Carthage Texas to Sterlington Ouachita Parish and investigators attributed the blast to a road grader striking the buried pipe. The dead include Herbert C Whitney 70 Clara Whitney 67 Mrs John Redding 34 and her three children Billy Joe 4 Suzy Ann 6 and Douglas 11. One injured road grader operator Bob Ethridge 48 remained hospitalized.

Weekend Heat Holds With Comfort Lacking

Appellate Court Blocks FPC Backed Rate Hike

A federal appeals court blocked the Federal Power Commission rate increase on gas prices pending refunds if the rise is rescinded. The panel sanctioned new rates only with refund provisions, noting the plan could cost consumers about 1.5 billion dollars in the first year and that inter state gas price could rise from 52 cents to 1.01, with post 1975 rates at 1.42.
