The downturn in auto production echoes 1963 as unemployment rises to 8 100 in a labor force of 111 800. Chamber chief McTigue pushes diversification toward white collar work and small industries while optimism survives amid welfare appeals from a mother of two facing eviction and rising living costs.

Mitrione’s kidnapping began July 31 with Fly seized Friday.
A Lansa Airlines Lockheed Electra crashed into San Jeroni mo Hill six miles south of Cuzco minutes after takeoff for Lima. Ninety one passengers and seven crew were aboard. 54 Americans were among the dead, the copilot survived.
Astronaut Alan L. Bean returns to Wheeler to dedicate Shamrock Street as Alan L. Bean Blvd at 6 p.m. in Wheeler. The ceremony near Shamrock and Texas marks his birthplace era with a school gym barbecue to follow. Beans family connections include a father surveyor for Texas A&M and a Fort Worth residence.
Famed American civil rights lawyer William Kunstler was arrested at Malton Airport after stepping off a plane from New York. He faced two counts of common assault filed by two members of a right wing group following a brawl during his June 22 speaking engagement. He was released on his own recognizance pending Monday court appearance.
Ankara announces a 40 percent devaluation of the Turkish lira lowering the official rate from 9 to 1 dollar to 13. The move aims to boost exports while retaining a separate tourist and worker remittance rate. Foreign economists had urged the devaluation.
Nagasaki observed the 25th anniversary of the World War II atomic bombing with a peace appeal. About 8 000 attendees including Catholic nuns gathered at Matsuyama Peace Park for the memorial service where Mayor Yoshitake Motoya issued a peace declaration calling for a total ban on nuclear weapons and world peace.
John S Skelly 19 of Pampa died at Lake Meredith when a sand bank he and companions were tunneling in collapsed at about 430 PM Sunday. Larry Perrine Amarillo escaped with their dates. two others were uninjured. Skelly died en route to North Plains Hospital Borger.
Twenty American teens three German youths and their guide were released after accidentally crossing the East West border near Zwiesel Germany. They mistook a Czech fence for the border and were picked up by German authorities then returned to Schwandorf for rest.
