Mrs Rosalie Evans a Mexico ranch woman was killed in an ambush as she rode near her Puebla state ranch. The slaying has drawn international attention amid tensions between Great Britain and Mexico.
The city commission and Santa Fe railroad representatives reached a working agreement for a viaduct crossing at East Tenth Street over the railroad. It must be ratified by Santa Fe's Chicago offices before binding, and construction may take about 90 days, likely missing this fall’s Tri-State Exposition. Details will be released after ratification.
Unanimous cabinet approval in Paris confirms that Premier Herriot and his colleagues will depart for London to attend the reparations conference. New York Aug 9 General Plutarco Elias Calles president elect of Mexico assured no hostility to American oil firms or capital in Mexico upon his Europe voyage. He said oil companies may own property and welcomed U.S. and foreign capital. He urged continued labor-government cooperation and noted his lack of involvement with Mexico's finances. He hopes for a dry Mexico and border anti-gambling cooperation. He called Mrs Evans murder banditry and cited arrests in the case.

After twenty years camera shy Mrs. John A. Preston sister of John W. Davis democratic nominee for the presidency finally allowed a photo. She offered moral support to her brother's campaign and appeared at a public event in his favor.
Palisade Colorado saw a one week siege at the Palisade mine as three post office robbery suspects were believed dead. Inspectors and Sheriff Wat son stated no trace was found today though footprints near black damp areas suggested the pair had tried to move within the mine. Investigators have not identified the fugitives but say they would rather perish than surrender.
London reports the first of three protocols to enact the Dawes reparations plan was signed by German officials and the reparations commission. It accepts the plan and releases German assets as security for a proposed loan. The protocol’s effectiveness awaits two remaining agreements among allies and between allies and Germany, dependent on Premier Herriot’s Paris mission.
John W. Davis returned to Grafton and Fairmont West Virginia to receive official notice of his Democratic presidential nomination. Moscow August 9 Forty one persons are dead and 3000 houses destroyed in the Ferghana province earthquake. Rosta reports 1200 houses damaged by landslides in the Ferghana mountains. In Pokrevskaia center of the catastrophe only four of six hundred houses remained intact.
