Federal Judge James C. Wilson ordered Ernest Gamble's Dallas beer shop closed as a public nuisance. He faulted federal permits in dry states and called the establishment an open saloon. The ruling, a test case, permanently bars operation after a temporary injunction.
A huge wave swept a sandbar where about 100 orphans from the Pride of Judea Orphans Home of Brooklyn held a picnic near Edgemere Long Island. One 10 year old boy Raymond Evans drowned while six others were pulled from surf and treated. several more children listed as missing though officials could confirm only one death so far.
Local NRA leaders plan a phased push to educate Amarillo businesses and consumers on the blue eagle recovery program. Cleo Clayton heads the information bureau and Roy Cullum chairs the adjustment committee, both aiding until August 28 when the campaign shifts to consumer action. Horace M. Dr. Preston Kennedy, dying from a suspected poisoning, told his two brothers that Dr. Sara Tuth Dean, a 33 year old pediatric specialist, gave him poison in a whiskey drink at her home on July 27. He said he recognized the poison’s taste and died August 1 after five days battling the effects. The district attorney disclosed the death bed statement.
Washington reports a crop reporting board estimate of 12 314 000 bales for the current year, higher than private forecasts. Officials note 4 247 000 bales would have gone to the guns but were plowed under due to acreage slash, with fine August weather lifting condition to 74.2 percent of normal and yield to 198.4 lint pounds per acre the highest since 1914 except for 1931.
Lubbock County voters will cast ballots on a local option for 3.2 beer August 26 alongside state votes concerning beer and repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. The election was ordered by the county commissioners in a called session following petitions signed by 535 qualified voters.

Louis Stacci a roadhouse operator known as Stacy was named by the federal government as the man who plotted the June 17 escape at Union Station Kansas City. Four peace officers and Frank Nash died in the attack by a machine gun crew. Verne Miller is sought as the machine gunner leader. Stacci pleads not guilty to conspiracy and is held on a 50000 dollar bond awaiting August 22 hearing for removal to Kansas City. Local calls tied Chicago to the case and to Melvin Purvis, chief of the federal agents.
At Hyde Park Roosevelt conducts a round of talks with Treasury Secretary Woodin and a team of economists including James Warburg James Rogers and George Warren. No policy changes announced beyond current pace.
Arizona voters report results as 12 792 for repeal and 6937 against with 196 of 444 precincts counted. Governor Moeur says he opposes the 18th amendment yet votes to ratify repeal, declaring I am personally dry but I support repeal. Greenway leads the Democratic congressional race with 15830 votes to Akers 7764 and Coxon 3022.
