An explosion of black damp and coal dust in the Lorraine Shaft, Bochum Germany, today killed 103 miners. Two were severely injured and twenty three slightly hurt. Death was instantaneous. Officials have not ascertained the cause but believe a blast ignited a gas pocket.
Austin Texas August 8 The Texas National Fire Insurance Company of Fort Worth withdraws its application for cuts in fire insurance rates in Texas and will keep current, higher rates as the State Board of Health and four other companies had sought reductions. The board may challenge the legality of the proposed lower rates.
Governor Wilson sat for three hours in a studio as an artist prepared a campaign portrait. He spoke of omitting planks from the Baltimore platform and planned to address Navy questions in future addresses. An enthusiastic crowd cheered as a spectator tossed a bouquet and called him the next president.
Associated Press reports Chicago stockyards statistician Charles F. Herine states beef prices cannot drop to cheap levels for several years due to a still limited cattle supply. He comments on this week’s high cattle prices in Chicago.
