Virginia's Byrd organization faced scattered Democratic primary opposition as 27 of 72 Senate district precincts reported. In Charlottesville area Joseph Henley trailed E. O. McCue Jr while Andrew Clarke led in Northern Virginia. Mississippi voting showed Lt. Irey leading early for governor with solid dry ticket contenders and Mary Cain as first woman candidate in that race.
A Senate subcommittee cancelled plans for a probe into the West Point cribbing scandal with about 00 cadets facing ouster. Senator Hoey said the Army’s investigation and a chance for cadets to plead their cases before a screening board would stand, while a future broad inquiry remained possible. Some senators floated abolishing West Point and Annapolis to convert them into finishing schools for officers.
A grass fire on the John Fain Ranch five miles northwest of the Canadian River bridge on the Du mas highway was reported before midnight last night. Volunteers were urged to aid ranch hands in fighting the blaze via KGNC radio.

PAMPA Aug. 7 The seventh Top of Texas Rodeo opens with a 4 PM parade and the first rodeo performance at 8 PM at Recreation Park near US 60. Hollywood star Monte Hale will appear and ride in the parade. Paul Crouch, president of the rodeo association, is parade marshal. Prizes honor best ranch entry and various youth and civic categories.
