Chad Maynard a 15 year old from Boys Ranch died from injuries after being knocked from a hay truck beneath a low telephone wire on a country road near Dimmitt Texas. He had been at the ranch only days and traveled with other boys to load hay. The ambulance carried him to Amarillo after treatment in Dimmitt and the body will go to Modesto California.
Senator Humphrey announced that the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee will hold hearings in Washington and Chicago on the proposed Great Lakes basin compact. The plan, needing congressional approval, would let bordering states form a mutual agreement on water levels lake traffic and St. Lawrence Seaway issues.
Britain sent 22,000-ton aircraft carrier Bulwark from Portsmouth with a wartime crew to the Mediterranean. Hundreds more troops and artillery boarded ships at Devonport for the carrier run. Prime Minister Eden, at Chequers, planned a radio address, while France held ships in readiness and a Red Devils parachute brigade moved toward the Mediterranean aboard Theseus.

Heavy cattle movement southward caused a shortage of cars in the Dallas to Austin division of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Ennis pool hours were cut as heat intensified, per co manager Judge Smith.
