Allied Forces Tighten Grip on Munda in Solomons

Gen Douglas MacArthur announced that half of the Munda airfield is under American infantry with tank support and the Japanese garrison there is encircled and being destroyed. Allied forces also press the New Georgia front, seizing Kokengolo Hill and pressing toward Salamaua as PT boats and air strikes hit targets around Kolombangara and Vickers.

Goodrich Chief Sees New Plant and War Use Plan

J J Newman senior official of B F Goodrich toured the Borger synthetic rubber plant as it nears full production. He foresees a permanent industry from the plant and notes the nation will rely on multiple new uses while four Texas plants, including Borger, form part of a 705000 long ton annual output to support war needs.

Water emergency strikes Amarillo again

Amarillo faced a water crisis after a booster pump motor at City Lake failed. Superintendent N V Moss urged citizens to use water only for essentials and avoid watering lawns and gardens today. Repairs were planned for today or a replacement motor, with normal production about 15 million gallons daily expected by Saturday.

Drafts to Go Slowly on Induction of Pre Pearl Harbor Fathers

Senator Gurney of South Dakota said Selective Service will delay drafting pre Pearl Harbor fathers as long as possible and seek equalized inductions from all states and local boards. He noted some fathers may be drafted after Oct 1 as local boards exhaust lists of other eligible men and discussed House Kilday bill provisions to block early inductions.
