Potter County Rancher Sees Sheep Profits Offset Cattle Losses
Frank Givens of Bar T Ranch eight miles north of Amarillo says sheep farming in the Panhandle yields profits that offset cattle losses. He started with four ewes seven years ago and now owns about 600 sheep of Ramble A and Shropshire breeds. Wool brought 82 cents a pound, lambs sold up to 17.60 a head, and six month olds around 10. He notes sheep require less land per steer and that Panhandle grass suits them well, with cotton seed cake fed in winter. Givens urges ranchers to try sheep despite prejudice, citing higher profits in recent years.
