Police conducted a massive Friday search for a six year old girl missing since Thursday afternoon in Midwest City Oklahoma. She is the second young girl reported missing within a month.
In Our Town of the Peace W W Hancock found W S Avery of Avery Egg Co guilty on five counts for holding or offering for sale de composed frozen eggs and fined $25 on each count. The report also notes Grain Sorghum Producers Association board meeting in Amarillo about cattle feeding and an $8 billion water project.
The Amarillo Eagle column blends humor and opinions on contemporary quirks. Margaret Chase Smith defends square values and character, while Orlando police hold self defense pistol lessons for women drawing 2,500 attendees. Showers broke a hot spell across the Panhandle with up to three inches of rain in Amarillo and widespread flooding. Four small tornadoes were sighted northwest of Clovis New Mexico near Cannon Air Force Base but did not touch ground. Traffic slowed as 34th and Georgia flooded and city rainfall totals varied across neighborhoods and nearby counties.
Senate investigators questioned an anti poverty official about charges that federal money funded a liberation school in Nashville Tennessee teaching hatred toward whites. An OEO inspector was dispatched to verify any funding and potential action. Newark detectives testified anti poverty workers joined rioting meetings in July.
Danny Schroeder sixteen of Perryton suffocated when a pickup propane valve spurted gas into his face. His body was found in the back of the truck on a Booker area ranch. The coroner ruled the death accidental with freezing of clothing and hands noted.
A six year old Mid west City girl, Brenda White, vanished after bicycle riding from a grocery store. Police, volunteers, and Tinker AFB units searched the area by foot, horseback, jeep, and three helicopters after heavy rains.
U S planes from Thailand, South Vietnam, and sea carriers carried out the heaviest one day air assault, flying 197 missions. Allied forces killed a Viet Cong battalion commander and captured his deputy in the Mekong Delta as U S troops reported 285 enemy deaths in a week long sweep, with eight U S lives lost and 33 wounded. The strike hit targets from above the DMZ to Hanoi Haiphong fringe, damaged a key rail line bridge northeast of Hanoi, but a Thailand based F105 Thunderchief was lost with the pilot missing and four more aircraft downed.
An Amarillo teen, Phillip Mack Walsh, 19, was killed when his car failed to negotiate a turn on FM 2176 six miles north of the city. Three other youths Frankie Walsh 17 Robert Holmes 19 and Dennis Walsh 24 were injured and treated at local hospitals. Lois Hunter witnessed the crash and described the wreck as a near total destruction. DPS patrolmen Roy Newman and various investigators reported on the incident.
The Senate appropriations committee backed a massive defense bill totaling over 70 billion dollars. It includes more than 20 billion for Vietnam War costs, is 1.4 billion below Johnson's request, and about 139 million under the House version passed June 12.
Treasury says about 82 million individual taxpayers would pay more under Johnson's surcharge plan. Senate panel cut defense items, including 300 million for fast deployment ships and 166 million for destroyers. Corporate surcharge could be retroactive to last July 1 with 4 billion in additional revenue.
A 19 year old Amarillo man, Charles Pennington of 91 N Jefferson, died from a chest wound after a shooting in front of the YMCA North Central Branch at 1336 NW 18th. Two 19 year old suspects were detained. a 16 year old girl, Mary Calloway, was struck in the ankle by a stray bullet. Police recovered a .22 revolver and a .25 automatic.
