Allied forces drive into Sicily amid heavy naval and air bombardment. Axis lines falter as Orel is described doomed by Moscow. In the Solomons US troops push toward Munda and Salamaua while German and Italian resistance stiffens. Western Allied fleets tighten water approaches against retreating German forces.
Russian forces stormed into Orel, a key Nazi hub, and fought street battles as they swept forward from the northeast. The Luftwaffe and German defenses collapsed under Soviet pressure, with 32 tanks and numerous guns reported destroyed and more than 80 populated places captured along a widening front.
Reuters report from Stockholm cites unconfirmed Bern dispatch saying Adolf Hitler’s health is fading and causing anxiety in Germany. Heinrich Himmler asked Hitler’s doctors for a truthful report, with physicians describing the Fuehrer as often apathetic and depressed.
Weather summary notes little temperature change Thursday with gentle to moderate winds. West Texas sees minor change and scattered thunder showers in Persn Valley. Richardson of B F Goodrich cites September retail availability for items like hot water bottles and ice bags, with widespread replacement of natural rubber expected as production grows and orders expand.
In Amarillo a divorced man, L L Gardner, shot and killed his ex wife Estelle Gardner and wounded bystander Miss Gene LaVail before shooting himself. The couple had been divorced since March and lived near 611 North Harrison Street. Police say Gardner aged about 50 died from a self-inflicted wound. coroner's verdict lists murder followed by suicide.
Gardner, once with the city trash department and later at the Pantex Ordnance Plant, is reported to have most recently worked as a cook.
Braniff Airways outlines plans for an international Europe and South America line in a stockholder letter. A special meeting August 19 in Oklahoma City will seek approval to sell stock to fund the venture. CAB recently allowed service extension from Amarillo to Denver via Pueblo and Colorado Springs and from San Antonio to Laredo.
The Navy reported no operational news for the fourth straight day from the North Pacific where Kiska Island has been the focus of frequent air and naval attacks. Weather has occasionally paused Allied efforts, and no explanation was given for the current silence.
