U S officials testified that federal funds support a Nashville school accused of teaching Negro children to hate white people. Capt Sorace said 87 700 in federal money went to the North Nashville Student Summer operation amid controversy at a Senate hearing on antiriot measures.
General Motors pressed the United Auto Workers in the ongoing contract talks by proposing modifications to the cost of living formula. UAW President Walter Reuther warns there should be no tampering as the three automakers face deadline on Sept. 6. Louis Seaton of GM says proposals will be discussed and that COLA is a bargaining issue, not unilateral policy.
Washington lawmakers said enacting a 10 per cent tax increase hinges on the President proving substantial new spending cuts. The administration must persuade Congress that large reductions have been implemented before the bill gains serious consideration.
