Moore County voters approved alcohol sales for off premises by 33 votes, ending a dry period since June. Unofficial total 3,581 with 1,807 for and 1,774 against. result may take effect in 30 days if uncontested.
Dalhart hosts the 20th annual XIT reunion and rodeo with about 150 registrants and a downtown crowd. Highlights include the reunion parade, free barbecue, two rodeo performances, dances, and a Sunday third rodeo. Miss Dalhart Jolene Torrea leads the parade with the Ama rillo Air Force band and the Old Glogy flags, as Howell McClesky marshals the route.
A memorial may be built for the 19 men who died in the Shamrock Oil and Gas Corp McKee Plant fire on July 29. The Kiwanis Club of Dumas has started a fundraising drive. Donations may be mailed to First State Bank or First National Bank in Dumas or Sunray State Bank.
In Whitingham Vermont water and small boats were stuck in lake mud as the lake level rose slowly after a cottage and lake bottom drained following a tax dispute. Lake owner Houghton N. Sawyer said he has made his point and restored water flow.
Sawyer ordered the dam sluice gates closed to refill the small stream into a lake, saying lakeside cottage owners owed him about 150 yearly taxes. It will take at least a month for the lake to be navigable again, and only fishermen are pleased as hungry fish bite in the drained lake bed. The lake, created 75 years ago for a sawmill, was taxed after prior reductions. Sawyer says he still pays for benefits he does not receive and awaits homeowners to discuss the issue.
Vienna reports a record 21 individuals crossed the Iron Curtain border in the last 24 hours and requested political asylum in Western countries, according to authorities.
In Texas Aug 3 Ralph Yarborough rejects an appeal from 24 loyalists to exit the 1954 governor runoff against Price Daniel. Daniel leads by 160,000 votes as the bruising campaign begins. Yarborough calls the move subversive and branding it a moral fight for clean government.
An Eastern Airlines four motor airliner diverted to Lovell airport in Chattanooga to rush Mrs Douglas McGill of Boston to a hospital. She gave birth to twins a boy and a girl both healthy. Captain H E Hames said he carried 52 passengers en route from Houston to New York and feared landing with 54.
S. Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon was found guilty of violating a general order against drinking on duty and negligent homicide in the April 8 incident at Parris Island that led to six drownings. He was acquitted of manslaughter and oppression, and sentencing was delayed.

Four Panhandle men who supported Price Daniel in 1954 signed a telegram urging Ralph Yarborough to stop claiming he is the only Democrat in the race and that Daniel supporters back Shivers administration allies. Signers include Frank Moore of Plainview co chairman for Daniel in Hale Swisher Lamb and Briscoe counties and Jerry Johnson Amarillo district manager for Daniel. Carl Hill Jr of Potter County and Charlie Gibson Panhandle party leader also signed.
A Houston girl, Rosemary Ben-Hourdan Atkinson, wed James B. Wise in Stillwater Oklahoma with Texas soil sewn in sachets on her shoes. Earth came from Austin and Houston ancestral lands and Minosa seeds from the San Jacinto river bottoms were included. The bride’s mother, Dr M Jourdan Atkinson, is an author and anthropologist.
A quick thinking barmaid at Sportsman's Bar 112 E 3rd thwarted an attempted robbery around 7 p.m. by claiming a police button would summon help. Dorothy Jonell, 27, on her first day, confronted a man who demanded money and fled after being warned to back off.
Storms drenched the North Plains from Tucumcari to Liberal with up to an inch of rain. Liberal endured a 30 minute burst of tornadic winds and hail.
