Campaign ends today with $2 500 still needed to reach $25 000 as Ed R Mayer warns the fair’s fate hangs on quick action. He urges 200 volunteers and 12 to 17 current workers to step up at the Amarillo hotel by 9 am to secure subscriptions and save this year and future fairs.
William R. Shepherd of Columbia University told the seventh annual institute of politics in Williamstown that the Monroe doctrine unites the U S with Latin American republics. He said it began as a self defense declaration against European aggression and now protects both U S and other American territories and aids development of backward countries.
Amarillo residents back Bill Erwin, a former Amarillo High School student and World War I ace, now a Dallas pilot chosen to lead a Dallas backed effort to fly a monoplane from Dallas toward Hongkong. He will fly with his wife to Honolulu before continuing to Asia, with sponsorship from local Dallas businessmen and city publications.

A collision between the British steamship Hornby Castle and the American steamship Cody occurred in the Houston ship channel near Galveston. Tugboats were dispatched and the Cody sustained lighter, yet undetermined, damage.
Governor Al van T. Fuller refused executive clemency for Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, set to die for the 1920 South Braintree murder. The reprieve runs to August 10 as the decision notes no justification for intervention and endorses the jury and trial fairness. The report states the decision will be seven typewritten pages and he later left for rest.
Borger August 3 Russell Neill unconscious for nearly two weeks burned by steam from a boiler he worked around has been kept alive for twenty days by artificial respiration. Oxygen pumps aid the effort as doctors say recovery is unlikely. His wife and parents are at his bedside as neighbors take turns assisting the plea to save him.
Tulsa report notes Mayor Lee Bivins plans to resign after city water and sewer projects settle. Officials expect departure after August 20 but before September 1 as the city advances a $500,000 sewage disposal plant and water system work.
Perryton July 3 Two young men identified as Dean and Spears were arrested near the Texas Oklahoma line after a running gun battle with Sheriff Sid Talley and City Marshal Frank Caradine. About 100 dollars in silver and currency was taken from the Moody hotel during an overnight robbery. about 70 dollars was discarded along the route. Sheriff Johnson of Hemphill County later brought the suspects to Canadian for detention.
Austin August 3. The Miami Texas fire insurance key rate was reduced from 92 cents to 62 cents due to improvements in waterworks and the fire department, announced by the state fire insurance commission.
American Legion leaders report strong potential for a veterans rehabilitation hospital and regional bureau in Amarillo. The decision stalls the contest between Hansford Spearman and Graver, with a new law on county-seat elections and railroad distance at issue.
August 3 report from Corpus Christi says rumors of a port embargo over cotton congestion are false. J L Boyd director of the port and nearby exchanges in Dallas Galveston and Houston deny any embargo while noting a temporary congestion at one compress and steady dock operations with steamers in port and due cargo deliveries.
Washington August 3 The Federal Reserve Board approved the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis request to lower the rediscount rate to 3 percent from 4 percent on all paper maturities.

West Texas may have partly cloudy skies with showers, while New Mexico remains unsettled with likely showers in the north central and extreme south regions. A high pressure area lies east of the Rockies with low pressure in western New Mexico. cooler air moves into the central Plains and Mississippi Valley.
