A pair of Russian wolf hounds were presented to J. W. Kent manager of the JA Ranch at Palo Duro by W. J. Adams Word Ranch cowboy manager. The two to three year old hounds are trained to police the range and have guarded fawns at Adams's ranch. The gift revives JA’s old tradition of guarding the range with hounds after the prior pack was disposed of and predation increased.
Bloodhounds from Texas prison farms traced six escaped prisoners through the Big Thicket after they fled Liberty County jail in Jailer Hudgins' car. Sheriff Pat Lowe led the pursuit as officers cordoned the area and the auto was found nearby.
Nine men including managers and engineers died from carbon monoxide inhalation while battling a mine fire at the Kathleen mine of Union Collieries in Dowell Illinois. A transformer explosion sparked the blaze. a temporary seal is in place and a concrete seal will be added to contain the fire. The dead include Forrest Bevers and Steve Hrim of Dowell, Clarence Canvey, Louis Rees, Joseph Spillers, Logan Graeff, Edwin Harris, George Ford, John Kelley, all married with families.
A passenger train struck a truck cab near Sherman on Saturday killing 16 year old Paul Pippin, son of a dairy operator, while 18 year old Ivan Daughety leaped from the truck and survived. Train engineer J. L. Candle of Texarkana led the investigation into the crash.
Joseph Anderson subpoenaed George Kaufman the playwright as a witness in Dr. Franklyn Thorpe’s custody fight with Mary Astor over their daughter Marylyn. Kaufman was intercepted at Avalon before a yacht trip with Irving Thalberg and Norma Shearer. he will testify about his acquaintance with Astor.
Eddie Cantor, once with Ziegfeld Follies, was released by Samuel Goldwyn from a film contract he has criticized. Cantor signed with Goldwyn in 1929 and typically starred in one picture per year earning about 250000 dollars per film. He left United Artists earlier this week due to delays in starting his 1936 project that affected radio and personal appearances.
In Salem Oregon on August 2 7 convicts who staged a fatal riot Friday endured two nights and a day without food. By Sunday they marched into the mess room for their first regular meal since Friday noon under tight guard. State police remained on duty as guards watched from a cell cage above the hall and no further disturbances occurred.

Retired Amarillo peace officer Frederick W. Cobb died after a Sunday morning wreck seven miles north of the city on River Road. Three others, the Van Hoose family, were injured. Mrs. Van Hoose remained hospitalized with severe facial injuries. Cobb’s Chevrolet coupe and the Van Hoose Chrysler collided head on as Cobb attempted a left turn into a side road.
Crew and passengers aboard a TWA plane arriving from Chicago described a violent snow squall at 12 000 feet just west of Newark. The temperature was 20 degrees and pilot Robert Larson drank ice from a cup to prove the freezing cockpit conditions.
