Ike Seeks Private Helium Plants or Federal Takeover
Interior official Hatfield Chilson outlined a plan to build up to 12 helium plants within 250 miles of Amarillo to conserve helium. The program, costing 200 to 300 million dollars, aims to extract helium before market sale and store it. if private capital fails, the government will fund the project. Chilson was in Amarillo for a two day visit including a tour of the Amarillo Helium Plant. The initiative is part of a nationwide Interior Department tour to show agency work.
