Harry M. Runkle, owner of a $350 000 Arkansas dude ranch, says he was deceived into trading the ranch for 100 000 shares of Estate Life Insurance Co. stock. He seeks contract cancellation and $135 000 in damages in U S District Court. Defendants include Estate Life director Joseph D. Birkmeyer and former Estate official John L. McCarty.
Runkle sues Hugo Loewenstern and associates alleging false promises about Estate Life Insurance Co. He traded 500 shares of Runmoor Western Properties Inc. stock for estate life stock in August. He claims the insurance stock was worth 25 cents a share and the company misrepresented its soundness, approvals, and growing reserves.
New York Times military writer Hanson Baldwin criticizes the Defense Department as a sprawling civilian bureau with 21 senior officials in the Pentagon. Panelists note the Navy's large, independent establishment and rising military costs, including $3,500 per year per service member.

The Navy announced the Vanguard third stage did not fire during the April 28 launch from Cape Canaveral. The rocket, which briefly rose into space, apparently lost the second and third stages over the Atlantic about 1,500 miles downrange. The satellite aimed to study solar X rays and their effects on radio and weather phenomena.

Amarillo police seek two or three juvenile boys believed responsible for damaging 150 panes of double strength window glass at Fannin Junior High under construction. BB gun pellets cracked and broke the windows over the weekend. Claude Mathis, general contractor, noted not all shots penetrated the panes and recalled a similar incident at South Lawn School years ago. Fannin Junior High in South Amarillo at Keith Avenue and Rusk is set to open in September.
Amarillo dozen auto agencies report 412 total new and used car sales from April 2 to 26 with 194 new 1958 models. biggest sales week of the year locally. Dealers expect continued strong demand and carryover prospects despite a one week promotion.
