Physicians fought to save the lives of more than twenty people stricken with dust pneumonia in Beaver Oklahoma as funeral arrangements were made for three victims of the swirling dust clouds. A new dust storm of fine gray silt blew into the Panhandle from the south and back again yesterday afternoon.
Women volunteers in Topeka and Wichita answer Red Cross calls by sewing and cutting 10 000 cloth dust masks for the 8 000 000 acre dust plagued Southwest. Masks, finely meshed, cover faces to aid breathing and keep dirt from airways. Red Cross chapters nationwide are expected to join in producing more masks.
Early today a cold north wind abated this afternoon as skies cleared and visibility rose. The Panhandle faced drought and dust while twelve patients remained bedfast in Beaver Hospital's 16 beds amid doctors fighting to save lives. Continuous rain drenched other parts of the state.
Judge James C. Wilson presides as trials for about 20 individuals indicted by the federal grand jury are set to begin. The grand jury has already returned 26 indictments and may add more for narcotics offenses under U. S. Attorney Clyde O Eastus. James E. Rogers and Edward Hull, from near Dalhart, are jailed on a federal charge of possessing and concealing wildcat liquor and will be arraigned today.
Miner Joseph Marmon testified before the Wilkes Barre grand jury that two rival unionists shaved off his prized mustache valued at $200 claiming the act was assault and battery. Bombings and conflict were discussed as expected in mine strikes.
James F. Martin, 60 year old postmaster of Santa Claus Indiana, died of paralysis after a stroke on April 12. He helped make Santa Claus a global Christmas symbol by handling vast volumes of cards and packages at his tiny workshop. The town, once a crossroads, gained fame as mail from around the world highlighted the name Santa Claus.
London reports say Germany is building submarines despite Berlin denials. Herald and News-Chronicle claim 12 submarines totaling 250 tons each are in construction, threatening Anglo German naval talks. Weather notes follow with a simultaneous dust and storm event in Amarillo, Texas.
Vernon Texas April 28 Judge W N Stokes overruled defense bid for a new trial for Charles S Richardson former Olney mayor serving ten year sentence for murder in his son Elga slaying. Appeal noted Richardson released on $10000 bond. Defendant claimed jury misconduct after conviction a week earlier. Two prior trials yielded life terms later reversed.
Joe Taugman about 50 years old from Iowa Park was found dead in a Mineral Wells hotel room. Officials said his throat was slashed with a razor blade and there is evidence he may have taken poison.
A San Francisco reader in Santa Monica writes before the President’s radio address, predicting mixed press responses. The writer blames Roosevelt and portrays America as an insane asylum with the president as warden, calling for accountability.
C H Day, chairman of the Texas cotton advisory committee, says farmers from nine cotton and tobacco states plan a Washington visit May 14 to press continuation of current agricultural policies. An estimated 1500 to 2000 dirt farmers may attend if only cotton and tobacco states participate, with more if wheat and corn districts join.
The Civil Service Commission found on retirement rolls a negro listed as 114 years old. Investigating, it learned Mark Thrash a former slave still lives in Chickamauga Park Tennessee and draws a pension. He supports himself his fifth wife and a stepchild. His eldest child is 92 and he has a twin brother living somewhere in Maryland.
Old Man Weather loosened dust hail and rain on Amarillo on Sunday. Dust clouds swirled as bolts of blue lightning flashed through the haze, delivering a striking weather display that outlasted the rain.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Terry of Big Spring and Mrs Rebecca Carr of Cross Plains posted bonds of 2500 each after arraignment before U S Commissioner Ida M James on conspiracy to sell and manufacture distilled spirits. The offenses are alleged to have occurred in Lamb County in 1933.
