Texas moves to replace Railroad Commission with Natural Resources Commission

The Senate state affairs committee voted eight to six to advance a House bill to strip the Texas Railroad Commission of oil and gas proration powers and establish an appointive Natural Resources Commission. The bill, already passed by the House, drew strong opposition and support from lawmakers. A hotel lobby confrontation between Charles F. Rosser and Rep. Gordon Burns followed the House vote.

Mine Pickets Clash With Guards at Brookside Mine

Five hundred mine pickets clashed with national guardsmen police and deputies at the Brookside mine entrance in Springfield Illinois. John Falber was burned by tear gas and two pickets were jailed as 40 guardsmen deployed bayonets and gas to restore order amid a large UMWA turn out.

College president admits recruiting athletes to Texas junior colleges

Dr. B. E. Masters of Amarillo College told delegates in Dallas that colleges recruit athletes as others do. He urged cooperation to end athletic commercialism noting alumni involvement and staff paid athletes. He warned too many paid players distort college sports and calls for limits on payroll athletes.

Local Option Beer Bill Advances In Texas Senate

The Texas Senate approved local option elections for 3.2 beer after July 1 with a statewide Aug 26 vote on legalization. House action awaited on Senate changes and a constitutional amendment. Defends Own Case Given Sixty Years For Robbery

Jack Peddy, 38, who defended himself in a robbery with firearms case for a holdup and wounding a nightwatchman at Tenana, was sentenced to 60 years by a jury. He was among escapees from the Texas penitentiary last November 11 with forged parole papers. His self-styled attorney said a new trial motion would be filed tomorrow.

Officer kills famed bandit near WeWoka
