Washington UPI sources report Jeb Stuart Magruder former White House aide and central Watergate figure has resigned from the government. The move signals the first anticipated wave of departures from President Nixon's inner circle as the scandal unfolds.
Magruder, 38, submitted his resignation as assistant commerce secretary and it would be accepted today. He was an early organizer of President Nixon's 1972 re election campaign.
Richard Magruder, deputy campaign director, reportedly told federal investigators of high level White House involvement in Watergate planning. He implicated himself and helped hire G. Gordon Liddy for the reelection effort. Mitchell Dean and Liddy gave varying accounts, with Magruder as a Haldeman associate eyeing California office as the scandal unfolded.
Subcommittee chairman Tom Foley of Washington warns the House faces a real battlefield to pass new farm legislation this session. Speaking at Amarillo's Texas Beef Conference, Foley notes growing trouble in general farm bill support and calls conditions perilous, urging focus on the House and possible Delaney amendment changes.
Jim C Langdon chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission warned Thursday the fuel crisis could become a national catastrophe as energy policy debates intensify at the Panhandle Producers and Royalty Owners Association meeting in Pampa. He urged action beyond minority influence and noted potential price and supply consequences for consumers.
Partly cloudy and warmer conditions expected tonight into Saturday. Daytime highs in the 60s today and mid 70s on Saturday with a light northerly wind shifting to southerly late today. Overnight lows near the upper 30s.
The Mississippi River topped 42.02 feet at St. Louis and kept rising as levee workers fought floods in Illinois and Missouri. Upstream, the river flooded a 10 mile wide area, while damage estimates climbed toward a billion dollars with eight deaths reported. President Nixon declared Illinois a major disaster area and others seek federal aid as millions are displaced.
The floodwaters surged Friday as the Mississippi. River crest reached 40 feet near the flood area moving south from Winfield, Missouri toward Gratton Tl. and Meridian Mississippi. Levees buckled across Missouri with 92 breaches. Randolph County Sheriff Ralph Bollinger warned relief may come too late. About 2000 families evacuated St Charles Missouri amid chaotic conditions.
The Texas Credit Union League says Amarillo Air Force Base Credit Union depositors will be repaid in full after liquidation. W. S. MacKinnon notes no depositor losses in 13 years of liquidation history, as regulators, audits, and investigations accompany the process.
