United Press International reports a new round of thunderstorms hail and tornadoes struck Northeast Texas Tuesday then moved out as warm dry breezes returned. The severe weather since last Friday left 27 dead homes destroyed or damaged roads washed out and more than 1.5 million dollars in property losses.

Sanford residents voted 75 to 29 Tuesday to keep the town incorporated in the largest turnout in its history. A total of 104 of 111 eligible voters cast ballots, surpassing all prior Sanford elections. The vote followed a petition by 42 residents to address tax issues by disincorporating the town.

Terri Thornton, a four-year-old from Liberal Kansas, was abducted Monday afternoon and located Tuesday atop a supermarket check stand unharmed but hungry. Police, sheriff’s deputies, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and FBI hunted leads as a woman and a man were described only vaguely by a five year old friend. The girl, who had been with the pair overnight, said she had eaten nothing since being picked up.
Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara was accused by Rep. F Edward Hebert of insulting a House subcommittee over its critique of his decision to phase out manned bombers. Hebert called McNamara’s remarks an insulting indictment of a congressional report, while a Defense Department spokesman said Hebert was rewriting the report. The dispute followed a Senate Armed Services panel urging Congress to back 167.9 million for an anti missile defense and McNamara’s choice to keep Nike X in research. The Air Force supported a full advance bomber plan, while McNamara cited cost and nonunanimity among the Joint Chiefs.
