President Roosevelt unveiled a three man leadership to run a four billion dollar works relief plan. Harry Hopkins joins Ickes and Walker as equal rank heads to allocate funds supervise purchases and place 3.5 million able to work on jobs by mid year.
Dallam County farmers plan a meeting led by Frank Machotka to discuss using high explosives to induce rain. Tex Thornton, an Amarillo explosives expert, will advise on feasibility and funding, with county officials contributing partial funds. The session at 1 PM in the county courtroom will be presided over by County Judge W N Cowen.
Jurors were granted a recess overnight and will resume deliberations on Monday morning. Pleadings and exhibits remain available for review as the trial proceeds.

A secret court of inquiry in Austin focused on Howard Pierson, 20, the confessed slayer of his parents Justice William A. Pierson and his wife. District Attorney James P. Hart said there is no need now to commit him to a state hospital for observation. The youth had cited a motive of vengeance and financial gain.
Clocks in hundreds of cities across the East South Midwest and Canada will be set forward one hour at 2 A M Sunday as daylight saving time begins. Most Eastern cities will adopt the change, with clocks returning to standard time on September 29.
An $1,800 airplane that any motorist can fly with 30 minutes instruction will be manufactured in Indianapolis by Sky Craft Inc by May 15. Powered by a Ford V-8, it will resemble an automobile with wings and a propeller, cruise at 92 mph, and cost about 10 cents per mile to operate.
The Texas House approved a bill to cut dust storms arising in the Panhandle and sent it to the Senate. Senator Clint Small of Amarillo said he would request the Senate State Affairs committee to consider the measure.
Otto Studer of Pampa praised Rep. H. K. Stanfield for pushing wind erosion legislation in the Texas Legislature. Studer, visiting Austin, reported Stanfield passed the soil erosion bill by unanimous vote and urged readers to note his efficient work on the measure.
A report on a bill moving through the Texas House details plan to authorize counties to vote on creating wind erosion conservation districts. The measure initially included ad valorem tax remission for seven Panhandle counties and partial remission for three, but that feature was removed by the House committee.
Two Mexican ranchers Telesoforo Arguelles and Serafin Marroquin faced murder and robbery with firearms charges in the slaying of American geologist Raymond S. Bengson near Matamoros. They were bound over to Judge Cristan Canales Jr. without bond. Authorities also seized 125 pesos and found bloodstained shoes and clothing at Arguelles home.
One hundred ninety volunteers gathered in the Crystal Ballroom at the Herring Hotel for the Victory Banquet as Amarillo presses toward a $30 000 budget goal. A reported total of $20 339 50 was raised, with campaign leaders optimistic and Wilbur C Hawk returning from New York to join the push.
In Huntsville on April 26 R Holland became the first convict from Andrews County to be sent to the state penitentiary. He received a three year term for theft of oil machinery after a long appellate path. County officials, including Sheriff Dick Billard, herald the historic arrival amid a claim of a once law abiding Panhandle community.
State Rep. Joseph Fisher, a Huey Long lieutenant, was found guilty on two of seven counts in a federal tax case in New Orleans. Judge Wayne Borah sentenced him to 18 months in Atlanta federal prison and required payment of prosecution costs. One felony count carried up to five years and $10,000. another misdemeanor carried up to one year and $10,000.
Edinburg a jury sentenced ex convict James D. McAlister to death for the slaying of Percy A. Calkins a Houston salesman. The verdict followed a brief deliberation and the confession and insanity findings. Richard A. Palmer indicted with McAlister faces trial tomorrow as a 150 man venire was drawn.
Partly cloudy conditions are expected across Amarillo and surrounding West Texas areas with a fair outlook for Saturday. New Mexico remains generally fair with little temperature change, and regional hourly readings from yesterday are noted without significant shifts.
The House approved a 45000 appropriation for the Amarillo helium plant, raising the Navy Department provision from 10000 to 45000 to keep operations on a curtailed basis. Representative Marvin Jones said the extra funds ensure skeleton operations and support ongoing gas and oil investigations if the interior bill adds 115000.
Judge Michel Provosty granted a preliminary injunction in civil district court blocking the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board from disbursing a 1.8 million dollar Public Works Administration loan for board improvements. Governor O K Allen, ally of Senator Huey P Long, sought the move to place expenditures under a new state board created at Long’s urging.
Miss Mary McElroy appealed to Gov. Park to spare Walter H. McGee, the kidnapping case’s death sentence, presenting a 300 word commutation plea and stating her distress over the gallows. The governor gave no assurance of his course and would not disclose his plans.
Hollywood April 26. Countess Rina de Liguoro a pianist actress and social figure is questioned in the Hollywood shooting case that left Paul Ivar dead and his chauffeur Howard responsible for another death. A telegram addressed to the countess is found in Ivar’s quarters.
The grand jury returned 13 indictments, including three doctors Dr. Charles Todd Dalhart Dr. J P Powell Dalhart and Dr M A Biggers Canyon and druggist Guy McGee Canyon and Clifford Barrett Hutchinson County. The panel adjourned for weekend after reporting to Judge James Wilson.
