The Amarillo Sonics defeated the Austin Braves 5-3 on Sunday to complete a two-game series sweep. The team departs today on a seven game road trip through Albuquerque and El Paso.
U S Marines repulsed a Viet Cong assault on a Da Nang area outpost near Phu Bai. Two Marines killed, at least five others wounded. two separate outposts attacked with one man killed and another wounded. Air raids damaged a Bai Duc bridge approach and anti-aircraft defenses, with plans for a wider Da Nang confrontation as Dien Bien Phu anniversary nears.
Murky floodwater from the Mississippi surged through a broken dike in Rock Island injuring a 54 block industrial zone and threatening a 1200 home complex. Only one three mile earthen levee remained protecting the area as workers rushed to reinforce it and evacuees were urged to leave.

In Atlanta, Lester Maddox and about 2,000 segregationists marching eight abreast along Peachtree Street were diverted by a smoke bomb set off by an unidentified white man. Police rerouted the crowd to a city park amid drizzle, as Maddox denounced communism and poverty programs and urged support for George Wallace.
A 16 year old runaway from Long Beach opened fire along U S 101 near Santa Maria Calif killing two motorists and wounding 11 before dying in a hillside gun battle with officers The youth Michael Andrew Clark used a 30 06 Mauser rifle and was found dead after a dawn attack Traffic stalled for hours as officers exchanged shots with the sniper Six vehicles were hit including a police car Two critically wounded victims were Bill Reida and his five year old son Kevin Dean Reida relatives identified two slain men as Charles Hogan and Joel Kocab Officials credited a truck driver who used an oil tool rig to block the line until authorities could close in The boy s father Forrest Clark reported him as a runaway prior to the shooting
A former Amarillo man Dewey Mount 24 and his wife Mary Ann 23 were killed when their Cessna 172 crashed near Evergreen Alabama. The couple lived in Decatur Alabama and were flying from Decatur to Pensacola Florida when the wreckage was found two miles from the Evergreen airport. A Civil Air Patrol crash officer said a board of inquiry will investigate the accident.
In Santo Domingo a military coup toppled the U S backed civilian junta and attacked the presidential palace. Ra mon Caceres Troncoso and Reid Cabral were inside the palace amid power struggles as air force and navy factions pressed for a military junta and a return to constitutionality. Exiled former president Juan D Bosch was sought by rebel factions, with no casualty reports confirmed.
At the New York World’s Fair, a CORE demonstration clashed briefly with SPONGE counterpickets. About a dozen SPONGE youths heckled and fought with demonstrators, producing at least one bloody nose. Police and Pinkerton guards separated the groups as the 16 and 17 year olds identified Thomas Jefferson High School Brooklyn as their target.
