The Texas Highway Department reports 16.6 million out of state visitors traveled by road last year and spent 136.40 per Texan resident in Texas. Visiting tourists are a fresh stream of money for the state, says Tom Taylor, directing the travel division.

Amarillo College regents agreed to a 30 day proposal to take the old Amarillo High site from the public school district. If accepted, AC may turn part of the downtown campus to the Bivins Foundation for an elderly housing activities center, with demolition costs set as the purchase price. The school board explored 12 demolition bids from six firms, ranging 32 thousand to 226 thousand dollars, with a 39 thousand bid for full razing within 90 days attracting attention.
Governor Dolph Briscoe signed a bill allowing insurers to offer up to 2500 for driver injuries regardless of fault. Opponents call it a phony no fault bill since it does not bar additional lawsuits. Briscoe says it could reduce lawsuits and lower auto insurance costs.

Two Army helicopters collided and crashed during a large training exercise at Ft Hood Texas killing eight soldiers and wounding five as a rainstorm and tornadoes affected the base near Killeen. Defense Secretary Elliott Richardson witnessed the event during Operation Copters.
The Texas Senate approved an 18 year old rights bill 18 to 11, sending it to the House despite Sen. Don Adams objections. Senators also backed a 26 to 4 amendment merging the Texas Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeals and altering circuit courts. House debate focused on a 9.7 billion two year state budget with no new taxes predicted.
A private firm, Customized Service Co, bids to take over Amarillo trash collection prompting a four week delay by the City Commission on a proposed ordinance. The firm, now absorbed by a national company, offered $2.20 monthly residential service while current city rates are 75 cents. Local 340 opposes privatization, arguing city service is best. The commission also denied rezoning 10 of 12 Osage Birmingham lots for mobile homes.
