A $2 million F4B Phantom burst into flames during refueling at Amarillo Air Force Base about 12:20 a.m. Both the Marine pilot Maj Michael P. Cady and Navy Lt. Jerald A. Welch escaped unharmed. Foam trucks extinguished the fire in minutes. The jet was on a night navigation training flight from Meridian, Mississippi to El Toro, California. An F8 Crusader nearby sustained minor damage. The cause is under investigation.

82 Dead In Ardmore Airliner Crash In Oklahoma
The death toll from the southern Oklahoma crash rose to 82 as 75 Army recruits and six civilians died when an American Flyers jet hit a mountainside near Ardmore. Pvt John H Benoit, 20, of Vermont, died Sunday in San Antonio after 10 crash survivors were treated there. 75 bodies rest at Ft Sill morgue.
