Washington Moves to Permanently Back Soil Erosion Efforts

The House completed action to make President Roosevelt s emergency soil erosion measures permanent and sent the bill to the White House. The measure creates a permanent soil conservation service within the agriculture department to manage wind and water erosion, using existing funds and personnel from the former soil erosion service. Senator Clint Small proposes similar Texas Panhandle wind erosion districts to qualify for tax remission in 1935 and 1936, with tax relief varying by county.

Bolivians halt Paraguay advance in Chaco fighting

Bolivian forces under Gen. Enrique Penaranda hurled nine regiments totaling about 8,000 men into Paraguay’s center near Charagua in Santa Cruz. Paraguayans evacuated Charagua after pressure along the 120 mile Chaco front, as fighting intensified since April 17 with heavy casualties on both sides.

Randel succeeds E L Pitts of Lubbock and is a charter Panhandle Lions Club member, immediate past president, and longtime chamber of commerce director. Childress and Big Spring contested for the convention site with Childress winning by a vote margin.

Rig Mishap Fatal to Shamrock Man

Special to The News. A. J. Wiseman about 55 a known rig builder was killed when a steel frame fell from an oil well rig at the W. R. White well east of Shamrock. He died after being rushed to a Shamrock hospital. Webb Wiseman his son was present. Funeral arrangements await the widow and relatives from Mangum Oklahoma.

Clipper Returns Home From Honolulu Flight

The flying Clipper reached Alameda at 2 58 P M local time after a 2400 mile return voyage from Honolulu in 20 hours 59 minutes. About 10 000 spectators watched as the big monoplane landed on the water. Captain Edwin Musick and five crewmen debarked after customs and agriculture checks.

Two Charged in Near Riot at Relief Headquarters

G M Dudley and E J Ellis faced simple assault charges after a near riot at Potter County relief headquarters yesterday morning. Relief Administrator A A Meredith received blows. warrants issued after 5 30 to 6 00 pending investigation and state guidance from Adam Johnson. The county attorney cites a maximum $25 fine. officials report the situation under control.

Clovis Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident

Monroe Moore, 33, a drug store employee, was killed after his motorcycle veered to miss a truck turning in front of him. He was hurled against a signboard, the machine skidded into a ditch, and died about an hour later. Truck driver R E Dick, employed by George W Orr Construction Co, was on a highway job. Funeral services set for Thursday afternoon in Clovis.

Man is arrested for murder in shotgun slaying of wife

Greenville April 23 Darden 33 was arrested on a murder charge in the shotgun death of his wife, 32, mother of two. He was taken to Hunt County jail after burial at Clinton Cemetery. He claimed their eight year old son Jackie Glenn fired the shot. District Attorney Pharr revealed a joint insurance policy on Darden and wife with an indemnity clause. About 25 witnesses testified before the grand jury, which may conclude soon.

Amarillo Area Weather Forecast For Wednesday

Forecast for Amarillo and nearby areas calls for partly cloudy skies on Wednesday. West Texas west of the 100th meridian will be partly to mostly cloudy with possible showers in northwest New Mexico, while eastern and southern New Mexico remain generally fair with a chance of showers in the northwest portion. Temperature trends show mild variation with yesterday’s highs around the low 80s and lows near 50s, noting historical high 82 and low 51 for reference in the period.

An earthquake rocked Provincetown on Cape Cod on April 23, felt for miles to Wellfleet and Gloucester. The Harvard seismograph later recorded it as an 8th quake with tremors shaking buildings and a Coast Guard watch tower at Race Point.
