Washington April 22 George Meany president of the American Federation of Labor told four hundred national newspaper editors that American labor is a major force in the war against dictatorship. He began his career as a plumber and is described as a highly influential labor leader.
The Faeroe Island community on Bordo mobilizes harpoons boathooks and shotguns as 120 Danish riot police sail toward Thorshavn to dislodge district doctor Fe Halvorsen. Islanders prepare harbor defenses, while Klaksvig townsfolk celebrate yesterday's victory and police report one injury.
The AFL’s George Meany, a stalwart of the international free labor movement, will head a ten person American delegation to the Vienna convention of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. He helped organize the event to counter the Communist dominated international labor movement. Meany spoke at a luncheon of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in the Hotel Statler. He urged a clear U S policy on Quemoy and Matsu and defended AFL CIO charges that spurred a United Nations probe into Soviet slave labor. Meany noted meetings with figures like Walter Reuther and Sen. Joe McCarthy during travel between Washington and New York. He also highlighted editor Charley Guy of Lubbock and editor Turner Catledge’s praise. The Women’s National Press Club dinner featured Sen. Margaret Chase Smith. Teen DJs voice a shift away from rhythm and blues toward Hawaiian music. Plans for Salk vaccines were noted as well.
Welfare Secretary Hobby announced a government conference report endorsing a voluntary state by state allocation plan for Salk polio vaccine. It calls for a national advisory committee to guide allocations based on state population and 1 to 19 age group needs to reach those most in need promptly.
Mrs. Hobby says Eisenhower approved starting tomorrow to form a committee to plan vaccine distribution within the states. Most vaccine is already committed to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis for first and second graders through May 1, with about one percent uncommitted. The foundation will supply vaccines for nine million children by the end of the school year.
A cool front should arrive in Amarillo to keep today’s high near 81 with cooler afternoon temperatures and cloudy windy dusty conditions. No rain is expected though dust reduced visibility briefly yesterday with brief five mile visibility locally. Nearby Tucumcari Dalhart and Lubbock reported low visibilities up to three to five miles.
The report notes Amarillo had 193 sunny days in a 112 day period in 1995. A comparative reading at 3 PM shows cloudiness and varying visibility with speeds around seven MPH.
Dallas April 22 Attorney General Brownell charged that gangsters grew rich in the labor union field under the prior Democratic administration due to lax enforcement of anti racketeering laws. He noted FBI actions since 1953 totaling about 1 400 investigations and ongoing cases at ~90 per month.
Portland April 22 AP first degree murder charges filed against Victor L Wolf 45 and Marjorie Smith 30 in the car bombing death of Oliver K Smith 35 at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Wolf confessed plotting with Mrs Smith to kill the attorney for 20 000 in life insurance.
Half the nation moves clocks ahead one hour for Daylight Savings Time while the other half keeps standard time. The shift creates cross time zone confusion as 2 a.m. Sunday triggers the change in regions observing daylight saving.
Daylight savings time will begin Sunday causing many network programs to air one hour earlier in several cities on the High Plains. The Sunday News Globe provides a revised schedule reflecting the time change.
In the West Texas New Mexico league Albuquerque defeated El Paso 12 to 5 while Clovis beat Amarillo 13 to 7. Plainview topped Pampa 19 to 17 and Abbiene won over Lubbock 11 to 6. In the National League New York edged Brooklyn 5 to 4 and Chicago beat Cincinnati 6 to 3. St Louis won 2 to 1 over Milwaukee and Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh 5 to 4. In the American League New York lost 0 to 3 to Boston. Washington defeated Baltimore 3 to 2 and Chicago and Cleveland drew 5 to 5 as Detroit and Cleveland battled to a 5-5 tie with Kansas City.
Five day outlook from Saturday to Wednesday shows temperatures about seven degrees above normal across West Texas. Panhandle and South Plains normals run 40 to 30 for lows, while most areas reach mid 60s to mid 70s highs. Normal highs are 73 to 83. Little or no precipitation expected.
Sewell Avery maintained control of Montgomery Ward and Co amid a five hour annual meeting in Chicago with cheers boos and disputes as stockholders voted for directors. Wolfson remained hopeful about Ward leadership while tensions rose during proceedings.
Severe weather tore through west and north Texas with high winds hail and possible tornadoes from Stephenville to Dallas and Gainesville to Electra. A windstorm south of Holliday in Archer County toppled a garage a tower in Duncan Oklahoma fell, Abilene laded rain and hail.
Britain's doctors won approval to employ hypnosis and train medical students in it. A British Medical Association panel urged hypnosis as a painkiller and for deep seated psychological issues, anxiety, stammering, facial twitches, headaches and insomnia, with a role in childbirth and certain surgical or dental procedures.
Hypnosis has been used successfully in minor surgical operations in Britain, but many doctors remain skeptical about its safety and effectiveness. Supporters say it offers a non invasive option, though disapproval persists across the medical profession.
