Air Force reports an Army C 54 with 35 aboard crashed near Odawara about 52 miles southwest of Tokyo. Initial counts show no survivors. Among those aboard were a four person family, a woman government employee, and eight crewmen. The craft, from Clark Field Philippines, was en route to Tachikawa after stopping at Okinawa amid rain and gusty winds. Relations said to be notified as crews search the scene.
Fair weather prevails with rising temperatures and a cooler Saturday afternoon in Amarillo and West Texas. New Mexico sees generally fair Saturday with increasing winds and highs from 75 to 85 degrees in the north and 80 to 90 in the south. Youth musicians of the Youth Symphony Orchestra conduct tag sales in the business district to raise funds for travel. Proceeds support their trip to Enid Oklahoma for the annual Music Festival and cover travel expenses.
Fred Varela aged 26 and Alphonso Najera aged 27 were executed in the electric chair early today in Chicago for the holdup murder of a taxicab driver, a crime that yielded $18.
Potter County farmers go to polls to decide on creating a standard soil conservation district. A two thirds majority is required for approval. The Small Tax Payers Committee, anonymous and unaddressed, opposes the formation. Polls open 7 AM and close 7 PM at the courthouse offices.
San Antonio prepares for a week-long fiesta climax as a big parade is set for this afternoon. Threatening skies and scattered sprinkles keep officials and crowds alert, though a deluge is not expected to halt events.
Two spelling bee veterans Mary Quisenberry and Charlene Barnard prepare to compete at the Potter County Bee in the high school auditorium at 2 o clock. Vivian Guthrie of Edgewood Illinois charged with forgery in the will of Mrs Mattie A Sebits Lipscomb County ranch woman has made a full statement after surrendering to Lipscomb County authorities. A grand jury recessed before Guthrie appeared as eight defendants face forgery charges including Oklahoma State Senator Orval Grim. State witnesses included Ranger Frank Probst and attorney Roy Lansing.
About 600 people joined yesterday's Palo Duro Canyon Treasure Hunt under summery skies. The first coin winner was P. H. Gaddis of Amarillo, who earned a steak dinner and season passes after finding coin No. 8097 near El Coronado Lodge. Mrs Marjorie Schoephoerster and her spouse from Burbank tied for two more prizes, including a handmade doll and an automobile cooler from local sponsors. The hunt began about 5 pm with more coins yet to be awarded.
On East Fifth Street the LaFavers family faced a four hour manhunt for Jimmy aged two after he vanished at around 1 pm. Police, neighbors, and about 20 children joined the search before the boy reappeared with a white shoe visible under a bed. The family expressed relief and fatigue after the incident.
Jack Robertson a 28 year old Lufkin pharmacist describes a round eight foot saucer that hovered above his head near Lufkin. He felt a burning face after the encounter and notes the craft appeared aluminum with a red glow as it emitted a whooshing roar and left swiftly. A separate Amarillo sighting by 12 year old David Lightfoot described a saucer with a red glow and a liquid spray, with witnesses noting sunburn like marks.
