Relieved Hereford residents cleaned up after a $2 million tornado ripped through eastern Hereford leaving no serious injuries but 10 hurt. Path 7 miles long 400 yards wide damaged four businesses on U.S. 60 and caused extensive mobile home damage as crews worked by afternoon.
The sheriff described a tornado aloft about 100 feet high with a ball of fire as it crossed power lines. Rain and hail pounded the area as authorities were alerted by a teletype watch bulletin at 12:10 a.m. and dispatched to warn residents ahead of the advancing storm.
Cleaning operations dominated Hereford after a Monday tornado tore through the northeast, collapsing roofs and shattering windows. Residents reported total losses and hopeful timelines as law enforcement coordinated relief. 27 officers from multiple agencies assisted, with a promise to return to normal by Tuesday noon.
Hereford Texas woke to a nighttime tornado that struck about 12 45 am causing heavy damage estimated at 1 8 million dollars. Residents escaped serious injuries as the Deaf Smith County Hospital narrowly avoided damage by a half block. The storm moved quickly through the north part of town leaving cars and sirens as witnesses recall.
The Texas House passed liquor by the drink with a two thirds vote to trigger local option on the May 18 ballot in 51 counties. Senate approval seems likely only with same two thirds support. otherwise a conference committee will be needed to settle differences. No Panhandle or South Plains counties meet immediate criteria. Local options will occur after petitions to county commissions.
The Silver Santa Fe Chief will stop in Amarillo for the final time April 30 as Railpax takes over, ending Santa Fe passenger service here. The Super Chief El Capitan and Texas Chief will continue between major cities under Railpax, with a closing ceremony planned for Amarillo.
