Wilbur a 44 year old African lion purchased at a Dalhart zoo auction sits in a sturdy cage at the Animal Shelter pending a permanent home. The item notes other brief world and national items, including royal marriage plans and a rail strike report.
Rex Baxter Jr. of Amarillo shot a 4 under par 68 on Sunday to tie for fourth in the Houston Golf Classic and earn 2600 dollars in prize money.
In Platte County Nebraska a state trooper in a helicopter recaptured two convicts from the Nebraska Penitentiary escape. Moments later three others were flushed from hiding and captured in the rugged river county game preserve south of Omaha. The five, all described as dangerous, tunneled from the Lincoln prison Saturday night. Names include Richard Ruhr Richard Mason, Richard Lavender, Dale Carstens, Charles Dean and Frank Hancock. A 50 man posse pursued them after a stolen car chase into the river terrain.
Two C119 Flying Boxcars collided during a drill near Clinton County Air Force Base killing 17 of 19 aboard. Eleven airmen and Army personnel perished as wreckage lay scattered across fields ten miles east of Wilmington. Victims included Capt. Robert L. Pimmons, Lt. Col. Richard N. Griswold, Maj. Stanley R. Heismann, Maj. James A. Hopkins, Staff Sgt. Clyde Grimes, Maj. Woodson B. Gudgell, and Staff Sgt. Richard F. Davis.

Four year old African lion Wilbur formerly kept at 2400 Lipscomb was seized by City Animal Control and transported to Amarillo Animal Shelter after being bought by Kenneth Wagner and Stanley Marshall. Wagner plans to gift the animal to the zoo with other small animals if officials accept. Shelter director Merrill Buckles says Wilbur has a home at the shelter with a cage that allows stretching and community helpers are urged to assist in building a proper display for children to view the lion.
