In Washington the integration issue shows uneven acceptance. A cab driver notes mainly lower income whites resist, while many without children favor integration. Extremists persist but officials say trouble is unlikely and most residents accept integration as lasting.
C I Wall named president of Pioneer Natural Gas Company following a directors meeting. He succeeds George Baird of New York who remains in management. Wall, formerly executive vice president, will stay in Lubbock. Maurice E Purnell of Dallas is new director, replacing M D Snyder. K B Watson of Amarillo becomes secretary. A stock option plan for key employees was approved at the annual meeting at the Herring Hotel.
A jury found District Judge Woodrow Laughlin innocent of professional misconduct as an attorney. The State Bar Association announced its appeal to disbar Laughlin, citing prior actions including discharging a grand jury. Judge Louis Holland presided as the jury received the instructed verdict at 4 12 p.m. and the panel was dismissed.
An Orlando couple, Orville L. Warren and Gladys Warren, told authorities they took part in multiple murders and sex parties. Johnson City police charged them with the slaying of Josie Fair, a 30 year old barmaid missing since 1940, and the Warrens alleged killings at their home on King's Spring Road and various hotel orgies.

Dr Paul Kotin a USC pathologist told the third National Air Pollution Symposium that hydrocarbons in smog are the chief lung cancer cause. He noted animal studies show hydrocarbons promote tumors and may occur in realistic smog exposure levels.
Strong west cold front drives one of the year’s worst dust storms on Colorado’s eastern slope. Gusts reach 69 mph in Denver, 65 at La Junta, 57 at Pueblo with near zero visibility east of Denver and Stapleton Airfield unable to sight across the field. Snow falls on mountain passes in the northwest.
Beckham County voters approve a 125000 bond issue to finance right of way for widening Highway 66 to four lanes. The measure passes with a margin exceeding the required 6 percent, funded over 10 years from county gross production tax, no tax increase. Governor Gary supported the plan. Beckham through to Texas line to Oklahoma City route expected early construction.
