A tornado devastated Sand Flat near Cleburne injuring several and killing a seven months old baby. Rescue workers and locals searched for the injured as water rose two feet in streets. In Paris Texas the tornado demolished half of a Texas and Pacific warehouse, blew down the passenger station area, and shattered windows with no reported injuries.

Canyon Youth Wins First In Oratory Meet
Ernest Cave of Canyon won the national oratorical contest division at the interscholastic meet in Canyon. J J Deiss of Amarillo placed second and Cave will represent the Panhandle at Fort Worth May 26. Deiss also won first in the high school extemp speaking division and will go to Austin next month. Katherine Vincent of Pampa was second in extemp and Ethel Hodge of Ochiltree county won the rural divider. About 1,000 students from Panhandle counties attend the two day event led by W E Lockhart of West Texas State Teachers College. Results in other contests included Rural School declamation and various city school categories.

A 17 year old youth named Tony Corona confessed to more than twenty robberies including drug stores groceries filling stations and hijackings. Houston police describe him as the elusive Phantom of Houston. He was captured after a struggle and charged with two counts of robbery with firearms. Four Navy fliers die in San Diego mid air collision
Four San Diego Navy airmen were killed when two planes collided over Coronado, near the Spanish Bight, as they returned from target practice at Oceanside. Lieut. W. K. Patterson and Ensign H.
