The Texas Future Homemakers of America elected a president on Thursday during the state convention in Austin. Other items note upcoming Potter County property sales and a Naval affair involving the battleship New Jersey heading to Philadelphia after test firing as part of war readiness.
The Federal Reserve Board on Thursday approved another increase in its discount rate to 5.42 percent, signaling a strong tightening of credit across the economy.
About 165,000 telephone workers began a wage dispute strike marking the first national walkout in 21 years. AFL-CIO official Joseph Beirne led a picket at Washington's Chesapeake and Potomac line and urged more workers to stay off the job. An incident at New Jersey Bell saw a foreman trapped atop a pole and later arrested after a picket removed his portable steps. The strike caused limited service disruption.
President Johnson returned to his Texas ranch after outlining four requirements for preliminary talks with North Vietnam. Key conditions include a venue where other war participants can send representatives, effectively ruling out Warsaw and Phnom Penh. Hanoi favored Phnom Penh or Warsaw, but the U.S. objected to both for neutrality and diplomatic access.

A 2 year old girl died after being shot by the killer of four Arellano family members from Villa de Fuente Mexico. Texas Rangers led a nationwide manhunt for a sandy haired western garbed suspect. Manuel Arellano Jr. underwent brain surgery after gunshot wounds found earlier. The Arellano parents Rosa Elia Santos Arellano and Manuel Arellano Sr. and brother Eduardo were killed near Del Rio Texas.
Amid a Western Electric strike, Amarillo’s Drake office saw 150 operators walk out in sympathy. Supervisors, mostly men, took over duties as 90 fewer operators remained on duty. Lighted boards showed high demand while operators struggled to answer calls from pay phones and frantic clerks searched directories.
New York AP report notes mortgage rates near 8 percent in parts of the country and a $2,500 rise in the average home price over two years. Despite higher costs, builders forecast a stronger year in 1968 with 1.43 million housing starts, up from 1.3 million, while Fed raises the discount rate to curb borrowing costs, prompting cautious optimism from the Milwaukee banking scene.
