Plainview area twisters revive debate on whether tornado paths align with railroads and highways. Historical storms along the Santa Fe corridor favored populated areas, while many others cut across roads and rivers with little regard to lines.
President Nixon thanked labor leaders for backing Vietnam but AFL CIO President Meany condemned the plan as a total failure. Meany urged Congress to roll back prices and rents and curb profits while warning that wage limits and rising prices threaten working people. Nixon avoided economic detail, praising construction workers and defending vetoes to curb spending, warning that unchecked spending raises taxes and unemployment.
North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao forces overran Tha Vieng in central Laos amid heavy fighting and a cease fire violation. Pentagon says B52s and F111s bomb targets around Tha Vieng, marking the first U S bombing in Laos since February 23, with Cambodia strikes reported the same day.
In Plainview the monthly Chamber breakfast at Villa Inn features 250 breakfast steaks from Glover Packing Co as the Meat Appreciation drive. The mayor and chamber manager will attend with April host Tascosa National Bank, and proceeds plus gifts go to the Plainview tornado relief fund.
Washington AP The administration committee on Interest and Dividends unveiled a dual bank prime lending rate plan to aid small businesses. The large business rate would vary with markets while small business rates stay stable unless cost justified. Small business defined as loans under 350000 and assets under 1 million. increases to small rates to be infrequent and modest.
New York police and federal narcotics agents concluded a 14 month surveillance program with airborne and ground detection to arrest 61 alleged members of a $50 million heroin trafficking ring. Additional arrests included four in Detroit with 21 more sought as the case widens.
The House voted to extend President Nixon's wage price control powers until April 30, 1974, defeating Democratic efforts to impose tighter ceilings on prices, interest rates and rents. The vote was 258 to 147 in favor of the extension, with the measure now headed to a conference committee with the Senate.
Gov. Dolph Briscoe toured the tornado wreckage in Plainview as officials opened steps to declare the area a disaster. Damage estimates range from four to five million dollars with potential higher totals, as Mayor John Stoneham and representatives push for federal aid. Senator Lloyd Bentsen and others discussed swift action to speed emergency assistance.
Exxon Co. USA boosted its dealer tankwagon prices from seven-tenths to 1.4 cents a gallon, with increases varying by grade and area. The hikes cover most of Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, and parts of Kentucky, while Texaco and Shell offered no comments.
