Senator Edwin C. Johnson calls Congress to pass a bill to outlaw manufacturing gambling devices in states where prohibited and ban shipments into those states. He warns delaying action for a nationwide crime probe risks the spread of slot machines and weakens law enforcement.
Total War on The Republican opposition to it is based on arguments that it is designed to keep Senators Ferguson of Michigan and Donnell of Missouri out of the picture. Lucas denied it. The two Republicans, both on the Judiciary Committee, were described by a colleague as those who know the most about it and are the most Interested in the subject. Under Lucas plan the special inquiry group would be headed by Senator Kefauver of Tennessee, author of the original resolution for a crime investigation by the Judiciary Committee. Other members drawn from that group and the Commerce Committee would be senators McFarland of Arizona, Tobey of New Hampshire, Lyndon Johnson of Texas and Wiley of Wisconsin, the Republicans on a seniority basis.
Wherry warned of a floor fight if Democrats block Ferguson and Donnell from taking part. Johnson pushed the slot machine bill through Commerce Committee without hearings while McFarland’s subcommittee planned to study interstate gambling information and broader crime issues. The drive stems from a national crime conference urging action by federal and local authorities.
The former White House bootblack John Maragon goes on trial in federal court on four counts of lying to a Senate committee about 1945 to 1949 finances and government dealings. Witnesses describe accounts in Washington and San Jacinto banks and a $120,000 total inflow, plus a $5,000 loan from his mother in law.

A missing pilot Bill Denham 35 from Oxnard California and his Cessna 140 were found after a fog bound crash eight miles southwest of Miami Texas Edge Ranch. The instructor J E McLean also from Oxnard landed at Canadian after encountering the fog. Civil Aeronautics officials investigated the crash.
CHICAGO April 16 A decision on calling a strike against the railroads was postponed by leaders of 110000 locomotive firemen and enginemen. A strategy meeting on adding a third crew to multiple unit diesels recessed until Monday morning. Variations of strike plans were presented to the union executive committee as closed talks continued.
The Associated Press reports seven air disasters across the world claiming 22 lives. Moron Cuba airliner crash killed eight aboard including two Cuban congressmen. Washington Pennsylvania collision killed three. British transport wreck in Switzerland killed five crew and one passenger. RAF Vampire incident left one pilot dead. Webster Field Maryland Hellcat killed its pilot. Winnipeg RGAF Vampire injured two. Bonnyman Kentucky Aeronca crash during emergency landing killed two, injured one.
The Queen For A Day will visit the Panhandle to inaugurate Palo Duro Canyon Treasure Hunt with $50 000 in prizes. John McCarty says the itinerary includes a trip to Hereford after lunch on April 21 to meet Mayor W E Cameron and the Hereford Chamber of Commerce. The Treasure Hunt planning group will meet at noon today in the Herring Hotel. The queen arrives by plane in Amarillo at 8 15 am April 21 and will be met by Mayor Gene Klein and other civic leaders.
Rain and scattered thunderstorms affected much of Texas with heavy clouds from El Paso to the Panhandle. Tornadoes near Whiteface damaged homes and farms, with hail at Levelland Odessa and other towns. Totals reported include Amarillo .17 inches and Quitaque up to 1.0 inch. Local towns predicted cooler, drier weather tonight into Monday.
Members of the Texas Wheat Producers Association will meet in the Herring Hotel at 10 o clock to draft a new government wheat program. The Amarillo session will include representatives from 21 units in Plains wheat counties and aims to present a program at the national conference in Kansas City on April 21 22. Carl Eoper of Dalhart serves as president of the Texas group.
Ten men and one woman filed for the May 6 special congressional election with 10 o clock this morning set as the deadline for additional bids. County judges reserve ballot order decisions, Absentee voting starts once ballots are printed. Candidates include Altavene Clark Blake Timmons LeRoy La master J J Rice E T Burk Walter Rogers Ronald Davis Ben Guill W T Pickel and Talma Smith. Collins Howard withdrew. Talma Smith filed in Potter County. Woodrow Montgomery also in race.
Proponents of the 85 million dollar Canadian River dam plan gather in Washington for a preparatory conference and Senate subcommittee hearing set for Tuesday. Mayors Klein of Amiablo and Whiteside of Lubbock with Borger officials confer with lawmakers and Interior officials as testifiers include Connally Johnson Kerr Mahon and others.
Directors of the Texas Wildlife Federation urged a continuous 1950 51 duck season running into January with higher bag limits. The federation voted for a continuous season to the Texas Game Fish and Oyster Commission, and revised its constitution and bylaws amid heated debate.
Senate leader Scott Lucas predicted Truman's veto of Kerr natural gas bill will be upheld by both chambers. He spoke in St Louis and East St Louis and said the veto would go to the House first, with the Senate not overriding if the House does. Kerr vows to press on while Truman cites public interest.
Ira Flowers near the helium plant saw a pint milk bottle roll along the highway by Veterans Hospital and bring home a ground squirrel trapped inside. Water poured in made the animal poke its head out, but it could not exit.
