New York official Secretary Hull moves quickly on a murder case described as cold blooded amid rising public concern. Police investigate leads as the case garners state attention and calls for swift justice.
Representative Fish of New York urges Secretary Hull to intervene in Cuba within a week or ten days. He condemns Cuba as a terror state, cites Jewish and American property interests, opposes armed intervention, and calls for a strong ambassador and a provisional president to pave an election under the Platt amendment.
West Texas and New Mexico hardware leaders open the 24th Panhandle Hardware and Implement Association at 10 this morning in Amarillo Hotel Red Room. Topics include The Business Battle with E N Neer and Rivers Peterson, plus speeches by Jack Nourse and D A Bandeen on taxation and local battle trenches.
West Texas Chamber of Commerce leaders meet in Amarillo to finalize plans for the regional chamber’s three day convention at Big Spring May 11 to 13. President Wilbur C. Hawk and executive committee discuss program, speakers, and tax experts as well as Palo Duro canyon state park proposal with Canyon citizens.
In Amarillo, business and civic leaders from West Texas and eastern New Mexico gather for the West Texas Lions annual parleys and the Panhandle Hardware and Implement Association two day meetings. Delegates arrive for sessions and formal inaugurations after informal activities.
In Austin on April 16 lawmakers moved four measures toward preferred status as the session nears jam. Rep A W Griffith won 87 15 to place a $12 weekly minimum wage for saleswomen on a special order. Rep Tennyson secured 93 15 to bar a ready to serve gas charge as part of monthly bills. Other actions include laying on the table two more bills and granting two new introductions for Texan free textbooks printing and a one cent per 1000 foot natural gas tax.
Heavy fighting reported today between Pehtzeho and Changli after Manchu kuoan forces captured Chinwangtao and Chinese troops retreated toward the Lwan River.
More than 400 Lions from across West Texas arrived in the city to register for a two day session at the Perring Hotel with registrations at 8 this morning. International President Charles H. Hatton of Wichita is slated to appear.
The gavel used by Vice President Garner to open the Senate session will be used by District Governor C Herbert Walker of Pampa to open the Lions parley this morning. Marion Peters, president of the Midland Lions Club, delivered the gavel to Amarillo after receiving it as a gift from the Vice President.
International and district leaders visit Amarillo ahead of the 1934 Lions Convention. Notables include International President Hutton, District Governor Herbert Walker of Pampa and Marion Peters of Midland. Delegations from Colorado City and El Paso rally campaigns with concerts and parade-like activity. The convention opens at 10:30 in the Crystal Ballroom after a band concert at the Herring Hotel.
Charles Hatton of Lions International urged cutting crime by shaping character in public schools. He cited the 6,000,000 students already reached and noted Lions efforts creating codes and textbooks promoting honesty, sportsmanship, respect, and love of learning. A district Lions Convention opens in Amarillo. A church Easter program followed.
Admiral William V. Pratt reported that search ships located pieces of the Akron's outer covering this afternoon. He said the operation could be ended next Wednesday if the find does not advance the search.
New York April 16 Edward Horstman 35 alleged wireless operator for a Charleston liquor syndicate died after tying improvised rope to a hotel radiator to reach a roof three stories below. The rope failed and he plunged between buildings as Justice Department agents closed in. A blonde waitress Peggy Clark identified herself as Horstman’s companion and was questioned and released. He had been indicted for liquor smuggling and a three day chase followed by agent Hi Gershon. The room held wires insulators switches tools a wireless code book and a case of jugs of liquor.
Two suspects in the $15 000 Citizens State Bank of Knox City robbery of March 30 are in custody. One was arrested in Fort Worth and is moved by ranger to Knox City. A second suspect was held in Bejamin with limited details released.
Moscow reports say the prosecutor may seek a lighter sentence for six British electrical engineers charged with sabotage bribery and espionage while Russian co defendants face tougher penalties.
Easter services in Amarillo churches drew crowds from sunrise to evening as balmy weather enabled a spring fashion parade and seasonal music. Cantatas, anthems, and pageants highlighted the day with choral offerings and religious programs in multiple houses of worship.
In Clovis New Mexico a sparrow couple builds a nest by an elm near the courthouse. A decorative string around the nest becomes a fatal noose for John Sparrow, while Mollie Sparrow mourns and later the wind frees the body.
Dallas detective lieutenant Will Fritz announced that Carl Beaty, 31, was definitely cleared of involvement in the fatal shooting of a constable and a detective in Joplin Missouri Thursday night. Police had sought Beaty after a motor car title bearing his name was found in the house where the shooting occurred.
In Eastland Texas two men died when their airplane nosedived during stunts above the town. The plane owned by Evan Brunett fell in Brunett's yard after flying for several minutes. Pilot Bill Hussey aged 26 from Eastland and J W Penn of Cisco were killed.
Chicago April 16 John Joke the Barber Factor sought help from Murray Humphries and Joe Fusco heads of the Capone gang to contact abductors holding his son Jerome Factor feared for the boy's safety and asked police to monitor activities while negotiations were pursued The extortion was said to aim at least 500000 and Capone was reportedly brought into the plan as Factor faced an apparent nervous breakdown
A series of accidents in Amarillo during Easter observances left eleven people injured. A Sunday morning crash at Washington Street and Twenty Fourth Avenue caused six injuries, mostly minor, including Frances M. Wyatt 71 of Ong Street who was hospitalized with bruises and abrasions but not in critical condition. Wyatt is the mother of city chemist Jack Wyatt. The report notes other crashes and a motorcycle incident with additional injuries.
Jerry Malin filed suit in 108th District Court seeking 1300 dollars for an claimed loss from an advertised exhibition game that the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox did not play here. Defendants must answer by tomorrow evening. Malin is represented by Shannon Ochsner and Pheiffer.
