W D Fowler of 905 Mississippi Amarillo has accepted appointment as city manager of Dalhart. Fowler, an engineer with Hatfield Engineering Company, will assume duties in two weeks. He previously served as engineer and city manager at Clovis from 1940 to 1948. His family will stay in Amarillo until school ends.
Texas Panhandle and Plains leaders travel to Washington to push for an 85 million dollar Canadian River Dam project to supply water to Amarillo Lubbock and dozen South Plains towns. A hearing is set for next Tuesday before Interior and Insular Affairs subcommittee with delegations from 12 communities.
Sam Houston Junior High School choir departs this morning for Canyon to compete in the annual choral contest at West Texas State College. Mrs Helen McNeil directs the group which will enter several solo and trio divisions.
The Associated Press reports renewed fighting in Makassar on Celebes Island with one rebel killed in a one hour clash. A government spokesman blamed erroneous reports from Makassar for claiming rebel Captain Andi Abdul Aziz had surrendered.
Rain showers spread across the Panhandle New Mexico and surrounding towns with Tulsa and Kress recording about a quarter inch while Lubbock Tucumcari and Clovis logged trace amounts. Residents describe the damp spell with isolated impacts such as water on roads and telecommunication outages.

The remains to be enshrined at Arlington National Cemetery beside the Unknown Soldier of World War I may be a soldier sailor airman Marine or Coast Guardsman and may be rich or poor Negro or white Protestant Catholic or Jew.
Senator Tydings halted Frederick Ayer Jr the Republican aide slated for the five member Senate inquiry into State Department charges. Taft blasted the Democratic majority accusing them of avoiding truth and urged release of FBI loyalty files while warning of pro Communist influence in policy toward China.

Gov Thomas J Mabry of New Mexico will meet Texas Gov Allan Shivers on May 19 in Tulia for a Soil Conservation Week banquet attended by soil conservation boards from 52 Panhandle and West Texas counties. Shivers will be principal speaker and also speak at Tulsa High School graduation exercises.
Grover Brady named police chief of Pharr by the city commission on April 12. He succeeds Leon Reynolds who retired from the post to take another job.

In a Baltic sea search from Copenhagen observers spotted four yellow objects and an oil slick but all attempts to locate the missing four engine Privateer with a 10 man crew ended in negative results. A B 17 piloted by Capt Banta M York circled the area for six hours before fuel ran low.
A B 29 Superfortress from the 509th Bomb Wing crashed near Albuquerque after takeoff from Kirtland air base. Thirteen airmen died, including two Texans, as flames rose for hours. Officials gave few mission details due to secrecy surrounding the atomic weapons program.
Collins Howard withdraws from the 18th District congressional race leaving nine candidates. Howard and Ronald Davis urged a voters panel to decide who should stay. the panel chose Davis, with Howard pledging support. Davis opened campaign HQ in Hotel Childress and named C. D. Todd as manager. Talma Smith entered the race in Potter County.
Claude, April 12 Three people were injured in a Goodnight crash at US 287 and Groom Highway. Oleta Morrison 15 and Roxie Harred 16 of Claude suffered serious and minor injuries. Teddy Sedwick 17 of Spur had multiple cuts and bruises but was in good condition. Eugene Lee Webster of Carmel Oklahoma not injured. Sheriff and jailer investigated. Sedwick turning off highway onto Groom Road caused the pickup to overturn. Victims were transported to Amarillo by Murphy Spicer ambulances from Clarendon.
