Beverly Hills, April 12. Dio Rogers reports receiving an urgent telegram claiming Democratic postmasters in Los Angeles County plan to organize to extend their terms. He jokes about a Republican counterstrike and suggests withhold mail to Republicans to block anti-Democratic propaganda.
Thousands of college and high school students protested against war with parallel counter demonstrations. Clashes on campuses produced minor injuries, while banners and pledges marked peaceful protests. The antiwar movement denounced New Deal militarism and leaders, with campus displays and a White House petition forthcoming.
Harry Hines of Wichita Falls is named chairman of the State Highway Commission by Gov. Allred succeeding Judge W R Ely. The commission will meet April 19 to open bids estimated at 1 68 million for highway work. Hines pledges to close gaps in paved roads and expand state highways. He was born in Missouri 1886 and moved to Wichita Falls in 1922 after resigning as general manager of Deep Oil Development Company.
Governor Allred revoked the conditional pardon of Donald E. Covin, held at Gladewater, for the killing of cafe waitress Emma Sage. Covin, pardoned by Miriam Ferguson last November, had his mercy withdrawn after Glade water charges surfaced. Covin previously received a Houston murder sentence of 10 years in 1931 and served three years before his pardon.
Dr. Franklyn Thorpe was granted a divorce today by Superior Judge Dudley S. Valentine. Miss Mary Astor did not appear to contest the suit and the filing cited his charges of humiliating remarks about his earning capacity.

Allen S. Burrows 71 a prominent Amarillo Texas businessman died in a Tulsa Oklahoma hospital after an emergency operation. A native of Iowa he worked in banking with Senator John B Kendrick in Sheridan Wyoming before moving to Denison Texas in 1904 to organize First State Bank. He later ran lumber ventures in Tulsa and helped establish Hollywood State Bank before his return to Amarillo.
Marion Talley former Metropolitan Opera star secretly wed Adolph Eckstrom a New York musician in New City on March 3. Rev D H Gridley conducted at the New City Methodist Church with license records showing Talley age 28 of New City and Eckstrom age 37 of New York. The license notes this as both parties first marriage and Talley’s prior marriage was annulled.
A Reuters dispatch from Stresa reports both Italy and Ethiopia will submit their African frontier disagreement to a conciliation committee for a peaceful settlement.
District Attorney Grady Hazlewood argued the case of George S. Hamlin for five hours urging the jury to find murder in the slaying of his wife Irene Hare and to consider self defense and sanity. Defense counsel F. E. Miller and W. J. Flesher prepare rebuttal as Special Prosecutor E. A. Simpson ready to close.
A $30 000 goal was set by the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce activities fund group to finance a revitalized work program. Wellington April 12 Special to The News contractors estimate Highway 4 between here and the county line will be opened to traffic by May 1. The paving will provide a paved route into Childress and connect with surfaced roads toward Wichita Falls Dallas and Fort Worth, marking Collingsworth County's first concrete road outside city streets.
In Memphis on April 12 1941 three men robbed two messengers of the American Finishing Company and escaped with 4438 dollars and 25 cents.

H. H. Finnell regional director of soil erosion service with Dalhart headquarters has authority to approve CCC camp sites. Camps will be under federal soil erosion service technical direction as part of a $500000 emergency program to halt erosion. A permanent program will follow awaiting authorization from O. B. Martin.
In Denton Texas on April 12 Ralf Pulis a running mate of condemned Raymond Hamilton escaped after slipping through armed officers in the Lake Dallas area. Authorities gave up the hunt stating the youth likely fled after overturning a car kidnapping a farm youth and stealing a new vehicle during the chase.
