President Johnson designates Gen. Creighton W. Abrams to replace Gen. William C. Westmoreland as U S commander in Vietnam. The announcement accompanies other national news as the Masters Tournament nears and civil rights legislation moves through Congress.
Allied operation named Complete Victors sweeps 10 000 square miles from the Cambodian border toward the South China Sea. More than 90 battalions from five nations deploy with 75 000 combat troops and 25 000 support troops amid light clashes and tank engagements near Lang Vei and Khe Sanh.
The Wahine ferry ran aground near Wellington as 614 passengers and crew faced disaster. Rescue teams recovered 42 bodies with over 100 feared dead as fierce winds eased and search efforts continued by night.
President Johnson accepted Lawrence F. O'Brien's resignation as Postmaster General and named Marvin Watson to succeed him. O'Brien plans to aid Senator Robert F. Kennedy's presidential bid, with Kennedy headquarters not commenting. Johnson said O'Brien submitted his resignation at an informal news conference and that he promptly accepted it.
President Johnson named Gen. William C. Westmoreland to be U.S. commander in Vietnam with Abrams, his deputy since June, to take over when Westmoreland becomes Army Chief of Staff. Adm. John S. McCain Jr. was named to succeed Sharp in the Pacific.
In a tense session the House passed a broad housing discrimination bill by 250 to 171 and sent it to President Johnson. The measure imposes federal penalties for acts like the murder of Martin Luther King and targets discrimination in most housing markets.
The House passed a stopgap extension of excise taxes on automobiles and telephone service to clear up legal doubts and buy time for more debate on a proposed income tax.
The extension measure moved to the Senate for swift approval. The bill would ban sale or rental discrimination in federally aided housing and sparked charges that Congress bowed to riot pressure. Rep H R cautioned mourning the House as the bill advances.
Amarillo public schools Trinity Lutheran and Amarillo Christian begin Easter break at end of classes today. West Texas State University Canyon and Amarillo Catholic schools started holiday Wednesday. All resume Tuesday morning. Amarillo College closed this week and resumes Monday. Dormitories closed unless many request stay, arrangements made to house out-of-state students.
U S aims in preliminary talks with North Vietnam is to learn if Hanoi will constrain military actions to allow ending all bombing. Harriman envoy talks planned with Hanoi, dates and venue under debate as officials anticipate early discussions. President Johnson returns from Camp David with updates and no new developments disclosed.
A week of racial violence following Dr Martin Luther King Jr. assassination shows signs of subsiding nationwide with 34 dead. Tear gas in Kansas City at Lincoln High School, National Guard in Trenton with curfew, and a teenaged black man killed by a white officer noted. Fires and looting marked scenes near Stamford Connecticut's Fairfield County.
