Between Channing and Nara Visa New Mexico a prairie fire burned for about nine hours starting before 2 PM on the Malcolm Shelton ranch. It threatened E C Ted Houghton and other ranches, burned vast grassland, and ended by 10 PM with no reported firefighter injuries though livestock losses were feared. Over 200 volunteers from Dalhart aided amid rough terrain and strong winds reaching 40 mph. A second fire near Dalhart stretched resources as crews spread backfires east of town. The origin tied to the Shelton ranch with alarms from the Thomas couple prompting rapid response to Romero and Nara Visa.
President Truman and his staff wrap up a holiday at Key West after an open air sunrise service with daughter Margaret. He plans a 10 o'clock takeoff from Boca Chica Airport and a return to Washington to work in the White House in the afternoon.
Reports from Hong Kong say Gen Chu Teh assigned Lin Piao to lead a possible full scale invasion of Hainan, the nationalist island off China. Nationalists report previous small landings repulsed. the move signals high red priority after Formosa.
Gene Green of Pampa endorses Ben Guill the 40 year old oil and gas executive and former teacher for the May 6 special election to fill Gene Worley’s Congressional seat. Green, a 1948 Democratic delegate, accuses eastern bosses of hijacking the party while praising Guill as independent and anti socialist.

Senator Humphrey predicted President Truman will sign a four billion dollar housing bill and argue that Republicans removed its main middle income benefits. The compromise measure, approved by the House, would enlarge mortgage insurance and purchase programs and move to final Senate action.
White Deer resident Mrs. J. A. Phillips aged 54 died after a week in Worley Hospital. Funeral services set for 2:30 Tuesday at the White Deer First Baptist Church with Rev. M. V. Meers officiating. Burial in White Deer Cemetery. Survived by husband J. H. Phillips five sons Curtis Borger Ray J. Skellytown Jay Bennie Billy all White Deer two daughters Ernestine Patterson Porterville Cal and Preston Smith Pampa and one Ernestine Phillips of White Deer one brother W. B. Brewer Leonard Tex two sisters Mrs A. J. Taylor Clovis NM and Mrs Virgie Campbell Myrtle Mo nine grandchildren.
The Navy reports a snorkel submarine completed a 211 day 5200 mile submerged voyage from Hong Kong to Pearl Harbor with 505 hours underwater. The Pickerel dived March 15 and surfaced April 5 under Cmdr Paul R Schratz. Built at Portsmouth NH shipyard, commissioned 1949, later joined the Pacific fleet.
Seven House Republicans charged President Truman with a spend-and-borrow policy and announced a bill to raise the debt ceiling from 275 billion to 257 billion dollars. They say the move would force deep budget cuts for the year starting July 1 and require a pay-as-you-go approach while noting the current debt near 255.6 billion with a nearly 1.5 billion borrowing margin for emergencies. They also aim to shave at least a billion dollars from the administration’s 29 billion dollar domestic and defense appropriation bill during early House debate.
The forecast describes a calm to windy Easter with a shift from light morning breezes to strong gusts. Southwest winds reached 48 miles per hour at Amarillo, causing dust and visibility dips to 2 to 5 miles across Clarendon Roswell Albuquerque Dalhart and Tucumcari. The US Weather Bureau in Amarillo reported the conditions.

A grass fire burned more than a section and a half about 12 miles southeast of Pampa on the Smith Jackson Palmer and Worley Ranches. Pampa firemen extinguished the blaze reported about 1 20 this afternoon and later returned to douse a smaller flare in the same area.
Washington April 9 AP Senator Ferguson of Michigan says strong support exists for a bill to register Communists and Communist fronts and curb their influence but expects administration leaders to block action. Senate leaders would need to bring it up. Lucas says priority goes to other measures like fair employment practices. The measure, approved by the Judiciary Committee, would require registration and outlaw conspiracy to establish a totalitarian dictatorship under foreign control.
A Democrat accuses Republicans of backing Senator McCarthy’s anti Communists charge against the State Department to harm President Truman. McCarthy remains on a New York trip seeking witnesses, while Lattimore defends his eastern policy and FBI findings, amid heated radio debates.
