The hijacker of a United Air Lines 727 demanded and received 500 000 dollars and four parachutes before bailing out near Provo Utah after forcing the San Francisco bound flight to land. FBI said the hijacker jumped from the plane and is at large. Passengers deplaned and ground searches followed with several similar parachute hijackings noted.

Amarillo Man Charged in Motel Blaze and Truck Fire
A 24 year old Amarillo man Donald Steve Vaughn was charged with arson for fires at the Holiday Inn I 40 East and a pickup at 1405 B West 12th. He was arraigned and held on $25 000 bond. Firefighters battled five separate areas of fire on multiple motel floors. An unrelated fire at Electric Zoo caused minor damage. Authorities say another blaze at Sandy's Motor Exchange was accidental. The Avalon Ballroom fire on March 29 was ruled arson.
